A friend and I recently discovered the existence of Braggots (a mead/beer hybrid) and are intrigued. However, neither of us even know anything about Mead let alone it's various subtypes so I was hoping there were some enthusiasts here who might know a bit.

There don't seem to be too many listed on the site that aren't retired, but I figure it might be a niche enough style that new ones don't necessarily get added in a particularly timely manner.

I'm imagining these might tend to be brewery only releases, so for reference I live near Boston and would be willing to travel an hour-ish or so to check a place out (perhaps further if it was a "destination" sort of place that's really worth a general visit).

And if a good local version is a pipe dream I'm happy to hear about non-local stuff that's available in this area too.

    Thanks for any info!

I’ve only tasted 2 but don’t remember them all that well – only that they were sweet (as expected). One was Sam Adams Honey Queen (bomber) which they put out a couple years back. Wouldn’t be surprised if there were was a dusty bottle of that still sitting around somewhere.

The other was just a sample at Portsmouth Brewpub.

You’d think the mead makers would want to collaborate with brewers on making Braggots, just for the cross-marketing at least.

Green River Ambrosia is a meadery based in Greenfield, Mass. I know their Ginger Libation (delicious, though not a mead) gets distro in Boston, and some of their true meads might. I don't think they've done any braggots, though.

I've tasted their Ginger Libation and thought it was really tasty (though, I have to admit, it was a bit too similar in taste to a ginger based cocktail to justify the expense for me) so I'll take a closer look at them since I didn't know they were actually a meadery. I've at least seen the Ginger around here and there. Thanks!

There is a meadery in Blackstone called "Crave". I just bought a bottle but haven't had it yet.

Atlantic Brewing in Maine makes a braggot called "Brother Adam's Bragget" that I've seen sporadically on the shelves around here. I haven't had it in years but remember it being barleywine-ish.

If you are looking to try some mead - 1634 Meadery out of Ipswich runs tastings just about every Saturday at the Somerville Winter Farmers Market. Some of their dryer offerings are nice. I don't think they do a braggot though.

I believe Bog Iron in Norton, MA will be releasing their Mezcal barrel aged braggot, Devil's Footprint, in a few weeks

Thanks for th 1634 tip! Just got in touch with them and they said they'll be back on the 21st.

I'm not a big Mezcal fan but my buddy is so this will probably go to the top of the list. Thx!

The Peoples Pint in Greenfield has made Slippery Slope (really good Braggot) for a long time. This
is the first year I have seen it bottled and in retail. Ryan and Casey, River Valley Market had some earlier this week. Often times bottle offering are sold at the brewpub as well.
For me best on draft with a warm meal
    Cheers

Keep an eye on OEC's website. They do braggots occasionally, among other things. You can also get mead that is in the B. United distribution network sometimes as well.

Maine Mead Works in Portland is located right in front of Oxbow and I believe their disto footprint extends to MA (think I saw some bottles a Vinnin in Swampscott). Re: braggots - CBC released one named Boomsquash a couple of years ago around the time of the Great Pumpkin Fest. Not sure if it's been rerelease do since then.

I visited Greenwich Cove Meadery in Coventry, RI soon after they opened (either 2014 or 2015?) and really liked what they put out.

While you're there (if not driving!) you can check out Boneheads Wing Bar about a mile away for a 27oz Captain's Daughter - yes they serve them in that size mug.

Thanks for the tips all. I didn't manage to track down any braggots but I did go to the 1634 tasting and was really impressed. The woman who was doing the serving didn't even know what a braggot was though so I guess that goes to show just how niche of a product it is.

I was expecting to only really like the driest of the dry they had to offer but I enjoyed all 5 tastes and didn't find any of them too syrupy or sweet (one bordered on too perfumey though). It's not something I'd drink every day but it makes for a nice change of pace from a glass of port or other aperitif.

I'll check out some of the further away suggestions for braggots next time I find myself in their vicinity and plan to keep an eye on that Bog City release as well.

I'm not sure meaderies can legally make braggots since they're beer and they'd only be licensed to make honey wines. (Might be state dependent).

I'll put in another recommendation on Atlantic Brewing Company - Brother Adam's Braggot.

And totally agree with the love for 1634 Meadery. Only been there once, but it was a great little spot.

Just an FYI, I've never tasted mead. But on some facebook trade groups I've seen people in Michigan offering Schramms (supposedly the best meadery in the US) for NE IPAs.

This is true. I have a RTP that will trade Schramms for Tree House and Trillium cans

If you're up in Burlington VT, Groennfell Meadery is about 15 minutes away. Havoc Meadery shares the same building with them. Both have pretty good stuff.

Black Hog in CT made a braggot a couple years ago. Sam Adams made the one that someone else mentioned. You see them pop up every once in a while.

Mead is super easy to make. If you're interested at all, give it a shot. Just mix wine yeast, water, honey, and any fruit/flavoring that you want to add and let it sit for a couple months. I usually have a couple batches staggered in fermentation at a time.

I'm heading up to visit some friends in Bolton next month and I was hoping to sneak to Burlington and check out Foam. I'll add these guys to the list! And that's interesting that mead is easy to make - is it partially because honey is so impervious to bacteria and so you don't have to worry as much about sanitation and such?

Interesting that some of the meads carry that much cache. Despite my flair though, I don't do the beer trading thing - I think I just got it for agreeing to the beer trading terms in order to be able to read the gripping soap opera that is the Bad Traders thread

Mostly because I'm too cheap to deal with the postage. Thanks for the info though.
