Well it is definitely feeling like stout weather! I love sampling stouts of all types, but it doesn't seem like there are many local options at the retail level. I wanted to grab some for some friends coming into town from the west coast. Any good suggestions for a new MN guy? WI/MN breweries are preferred, ideally MN

Dangerous Man Chocolate Milk Stout is solid. It is taproom and growler only. They do have some stricter growler limits to keep the taproom supplied. Not sure how hard it is to get overall, but last time I went on a Saturday at opening, there was no line and barely any growlers were sold while I was there (only 45 mins).

Solid local stouts are actually pretty few and far between. My favorite (almost) stout is Bent Paddle black ale. the can says its somewhere between a porter and a stout, which is a good description.

...im racking my brain for something else good and local, but im coming up short. we're in the Hop Craze, and the darker beers are fairly neglected at this time. When will a mn brewery come out with something comparable to Dark Horse Plead the 5th?!? (probably my all time favorite stout both fresh and with a couple years on it. So smooth and good...most stouts are either too bitter or roasted too dark for my liking. what happened to just a good old smooth, dark (but not burnt) thick stout like Pt5, Sam Smith imperial stout, or Rebellion?)

@summitbeer Union Rebellion stout was awesome, but was a one off batch. Bring it back summit!!!

there is a keg of darkness getting tapped tomorrow, so thats an option.

Im curious now too...what good local stouts do we really have? anything comparable to Pt5? or as good as BP Black ale, but just a little thicker? Also, im not much a fan of DM choch. milk stout. I dont understand why people love that beer, but im a minority.

Besides the other two that I enjoy that were already mentioned (Dangerous Man Chocolate Milk Stout and Bent Paddle Black Ale)

Town Hall Black H2O Oatmeal Stout.

For limited releases, Surly Darkness and Indeed Rum King are good.

I like Brau Brothers Moo Joos and it is available year round.

Evil Twin has some pretty solid selections out there.
Brooklyn Chocolate Stout is readily available.
Last year's Founders Breakfast Stout is still sitting on shelves, and this year's should be released very soon.

I know you said stout, but will a local porter work? If so, try Ode To A Russian Shipwright from Olvalde Farm and Brewing Company. This is a very good Baltic porter w/ spruce from one of MN's most unique breweries.

I'm a fan of War & Peace by Fulton, which I've seen around in bottles.

TH roulette and 3 hour tour are my favorite stouts in the state (non BA) but very limited release. I enjoyed Bent brewstillery's taproom release chili stout (Not dark Fatha!). Worthy Adversary is tasty as well. I usually count on BA central waters stuff to get me through the winter though once that comes out. If you come across space ghost or the CW coffee stout bombers they are great options as well.

Summit has Great Northern Porter and Badger Hill has Foundation. Bent Brewstillery just came out with El Guerrero.

I also second Moojoos, DM Chocolate Milk Stout, Worth Adversary, War & Peace, and Olvalde Ode. Obviously Darkness is amazing, but we all know that.

And @MCImes is right, there aren't enough local stouts going on and Summit (@summitbeer) DEFINITELY needs to bring back Rebellion. I have two bottles left that I wish would last forever...

Forgot about that, Worthy Adversary is good too and all over the place still.

Lift Bridge Irish Coffee Stout may be floating around out there still as well. I wasn't terribly impressed with their Silhouette, but the BA Silhouette is amazing.

I forgot about Silhouette! The regular is solid (sorry @nograz, but I'll happily drink the ones you don't) and the BA version is incomparable.

I drank a regular old Silhouette after I had the BA, so maybe I was jaded? Will have to try it again.

If I don't like it I will trade what I have left to you for KBBS, Assassin, Wild Peach, or Rum King.

I like the one from Sierra Nevada...

Whoops! I mean August Schell. No, I mean to say the offerings from Rush River, Sand Creek, Lake Superior... I'm blanking on the locals (ahem! Town Hall has one that is always a good choice.) I pick up a 4-pack of Old Rasputin every few months and then an imported FES or milk stout or two, and usually I am good for an entire year. I don't go in for the style as often as I used to.

P.S. Central Waters changed both the name and ABV of their RIS, and I always thought the original version was just fine. But so many others claimed that it just wasn't strong enough for to be labeled an an "imperial" style stout that they pumped it full of sugars and VOILA! 8.5% Whatever floats your boat, I guess.
