So I bought this London Balling barrel aged barleywine from Against The Grain Brewery. Just dropped 13 bucks on a 16oz can and hope to be impressed at that price point. I am not drinking it tonight(drinking an Xocoveza right now) but saw the can said to drink this at 48 degrees and drink from the can. Has anyone drank this from the can or glass and could you compare the 2? Honestly, drinking a $13 barley wine from a can does not appeal to me.

No chance I'd drink that from the can. Not sure if it's outdated, but the label on ATG's website shows 48 deg with a tulip/snifter glass as a serving suggestion.

It's a good beer...just drink it in the appropriate glass and let it warm up.

Let it warm to about the right temperature and pour it into a tulip or snifter.

The flavors we pick up in a beer, or in food, are a combined result of the sense of smell and the sense of taste. Personally, being cheap, there's no way I'm spending $13 on 16 oz of beer and not pouring it into a glass that helps let me smell the beer.

Dood, just slam it from the can. It's clearly the way the brewery wants to have their beer go down.

    Barleywine from a can?!?

Yet another reason I've never been impressed by ATG.

I cant figure out how to post a pic from my phone or I'd post a pic of it. [IMG] This looks like my can, but the part on the bottom right where it says 48 degrees drink from the can is blurry. Hell, it looks like I'm screwing up posting a pic with the URL too.

Its a good beer, I've never drank it from the can or seen that on the can. Weird. I think its a marketing gimmick ... no way you'd want to slam that from a can.

It sounds good. I love a barrel or oak aged English barley wine. The drink from the can suggestion surprised me. I'll probably take a swig then pour the rest in a glass. If it is good straight from the can I will report back. Can't see it happening though.

This looks to be the can label the OP mentioned.

Ignore it. Heady says drink from the can, and I've tried it, but it's better in proper glassware.

So I went and pulled out the few cans I have of this and lo and behold look what it says:

I have *never* noticed or followed that.

Popped the can I bought open tonight. The beer tasted restricted out of the can, like it couldn't breathe. I prefer it out of a glass. Definitely a solid beer, though I would rarely buy it at a $13 price point.

The label that doesn't say "drink from the can" might be the earlier label for when it was in bottles. It's a very nice beer. The problem is the price structure that comes with their distributed and packaged beer. There's no reason to take anything on an Against The Grain label too seriously... and why would we in this case? I wouldn't take that comment seriously on anyone's beer and that's probably the point. Complaints beyond price are short-sighted because a 16 oz canned (and barrel aged) barley wine should be applauded just for its existence in that format.

True. Look at the label. Pretty sure they dont want to be taken too seriously. Its probably a joke like "yea bro i shotgunned a barley wine "

I hadn't thought it may not be a serious recommendation. Someone mentioned Heady (I haven't had it) says drink from the can. Are they kidding too? Serious question. My original post is not a complaint, just to clarify. I was just very surprised to see that instead of the usual glassware recommendation.

My post wasn't aimed at you directly. Sorry if it read that way. Here's a thread on Heady:
