I'm heading out to Long Beach for 1 week in October. I'm already planning on hitting up The Bruery and the Long Beach BBQ. Any other "must see" beer stops in the area? What about bottle shops?

I assume you mean Beachwood BBQ in Long Beach. If you are there might as well go next door to Congregation Ale House.

    And yes, Stearns for bottles.

If you're going to the Bruery during the week it's worth a stop at Hollingshead. The sandwiches and beer (bottles and draft) are expensive but it's worth the trip.

Belmont Shore has quickly become a haven for good craft. The new Zimmzys has 40 rotating taps and have had Pliny and Blind Pig on many occasions as well as insane gastro pub fare. The new Quinns has a dozen rotating taps and good pub food. Tavern on 2 has great taps and a good bottle selection.ABC liquor has a great bottle selection, as does the WF just over the bridge. Stearns has a good selection as mentioned but it's a bit over the top for me, a little to clubby and to much hype on Face Book which I abhor. Of course both Beechwoods are legendary, the original in Seal Beach and the newer downtown location which is also the location of Congregation. Yup LB is a fine place to live and drink, especially the cozy shore area.

    Cheers......

oh my god. Simmzy's burger is one of the most delicious burgers I've ever had. Their beer prices can be okay, but a few were pretty steep.

Not to threadjack but is House of Hayden a worthy beer destination in Long Beach?

No. Though it is a neat place. My friends and I go there some times after Beachwood for good cheap cocktails. Also, it's cash only.

while the bottles tend to be overpriced, i cant remember ever spending more than $8 on a draft at hollingshead (which doesnt seem to unreasonable to me). The best thing to do at hollingshead, imo, is to order a regular sandwhich and to 1/4 sides (marinated mushrooms and potato salad, please!). Otherwise, you can grab a reasonable burger for a reasonable price at the burger place across the parking lot first.

If you make it out to the bruery, you can also swing by bruery provisions in old town orange, which has a reasonable bottle selection and a generally good tap list. Within walking distance is Haven Gastropub, and while I disdain their food menu (too pricey/pretentious for what it is), they also tend to have an awesome tap list. Bear in mind that these locations are all roughly 30 minutes from long beach, assuming zero traffic, and that there's a highway patrol station roughly midway between so make sure you have a DD or are on a lucky streak.

My spelling skills are inversely proportional to how much I've had to drink. At 1am on a Saturday it's a miracle I can type at all :grinning:

Seriously? I can barely recall ever having spent LESS than $8 on a draft at Hollingshead.

Exactly. I got away with a pour of some Weltenburger beer for $8. I saw other taps that day that were $16.95 for a 16 oz. pour.

I would hit California Heights Market in Long Beach as well. Also get to Beachwood in Seal Beach for a pretty insane bottle list.

The SB location definitely has a much better bottle list over the LB location. Someday I hope to be able to split a bottle of Dirty Beaver Juice Weekend with some people.

Thanks for all the tips you guys and gals! Definitely going to be an awesome trip! Anything "must have" to drink while I'm out there? I'll be looking for Pliney on tap and other RR's. Anything else?
