Hey guys, I'm headed out to the North Fork this Saturday for a semi-annual weekend with my wife and a few other couples in which they will visit numerous wineries and I'll drink beer in a variety of covert ways. I'm wondering if anyone could chime in here with some brewery recommendations I can hit on the way out there. So far I've been to Long Ireland and Greenport Harbor a few times and was considering stopping by Spider Bite this time to pick up some growlers and/or bottles (?). Anywhere else that's a must-see? Blind Bat and Barrier are also possibilities this time, although I'm not sure if the latter is back open post-Sandy. Any tips and guidance will be much appreciated!

If you can hit up the blue point brewery, it's my favorite of the long island breweries

Port Jeff is a hoppin' little place if you show up when they have live music out front and you can't beat the location really. Cheap and pretty solid beers to boot! Plus if you're in Port Jeff hit up The Pie for some deeelicious garlic knots and fried mozarella.
    Blue Point is also fanfreakintastic!

Agree with Blue point its great, and barrier I would call before, not sure if they are reopened after the hurricane ( had 100K+ worth of damages) I also like greenport brewing. Great south bay just opened up a new tasting room, although I have not been there yet. Good luck, and enjoy!

You cannot visit Blind Bat, and Barrier I would doubt is doing tours, though I might be wrong. With them, which is a long ways from the north fork btw, you need to call before you make the trip

Sounds like Barrier is back open for business. If I can I will pay them a visit on the way out Saturday from NYC.

    Thanks for the tips everyone.

in addition to not being able to visit blind bat, you cannot visit spider bite (AFAIK).

also, i'm surprised to hear all the praise for the port jeff brewery. while i do enjoy some of their beers, the brewery itself was a MASSIVE let down. i went out there when it was a bit warmer and dragged the wife and baby figuring we could walk around the town a little after spending a few hours at the brewery. i was pretty surprised when i got to the brewery to see that it was just a single room with no chairs and no tables. you were allowed to have a few ounce sample of the 3 beers they had on tap, but could not buy a pint. you could buy a growler or a bottle, but that's to go and you can't drink it on site. after sampling the 3 few ounce pours we were out of there (yep, expected to spend a few hours and after 15 minutes there was no reason to stay). not to mention that port jeff is a pretty far detour from the highway. if you are going to make that kind of detour make it for blue point. at least you can have pints there and have a place to sit...plus the environment is nice.

i've also heard some good things about montauk brewing if you are up for heading further east. also there is southampton publik house. i'd suggest sticking with green port harbor and maybe adding blue point to your stop list...maybe even Great South Bay?

Barrier brewery tour starts and ends when you walk in to their space. It's very small, unless they've expanded since Sandy.

    Spot on as always...

I would only add, IMO, Montauk is worth a quick stop only if you are staying in Montauk/have some other reason for being in Montauk. Its not a stop I would go out of my way to make. I was there over Columbus Day weekend (literally staying in the hotel next door), they had three beers on tap, none of them were anything more than middle of the road. It was a nice to pop in, pick up a sampler flight and a pint glass then head to lunch, but not to drive to Montauk for that purpose.

Thanks for the continued tips everyone. I crossed Montauk off the list because they're contract brewed and not particularly highly reviewed at this point. I am thinking I will just pop into Long Ireland and pick up some Black Friday and maybe hit Barrier on the way out. I'm hoping to talk to the Spider Bite crew tonight at Brewer's Choice; my impression was that you could get growler fills there but perhaps I'm mistaken.

Southampton is an obvious choice but I've been a few times already and they don't have anything on tap or in bottles that I'm clamoring to try at the moment.

Southampton Might have the RIS on tap. I believe that they are tapping it for a beer dinner this Friday, or sometime soon, but I may be mistaken.

Yeah i saw that, thanks for the reminder. Nice beer but not something I need to go out of my way for, I don't think...a bottle release maybe but not for a glass or two.

They aren't having any releases in the near future are they? I have heard conflicting reports about this.

Agreed on port jeff. The wife and I had dinner plans in port jeff and I rushed her wanting to spend a hour before "pre gaming ". Needless to say no pints and honestly their beer is sub par. So we go to the restaurant (revo btw is excellent) and spider bites pale ale on tap which is 100% better then the bottle (wasn't a fan of it in bottle) . So where do you guys get together for the bottle shares, someone's house?

big ones are planned months in advance...but smaller ones can be day of or same week. in fact, looking to do one tomorrow evening.

we are actually thinking about doing a bruery one pretty soon with a lot of big beers. we'll need a bunch of people for that one if you are interested.

ready for a baby break

    hope to see you tomorrow!
