I'll be out on the island this weekend and have been researching what package stores have the best selection. So far I've come up with Hicksville, Superstar Hicksville, Shoreline, and Syosset. My plan is to hit one of these places, grab a bite at Sapsuckers and hit Sand City on my way back to Wading River.

My question - out of those stores do any allow you to split packs and buy singles? How to the 10oz growler pours work? Do they actually have 10oz glass? (I havent gotten a growler in forever). If you could only hit one of those places which would it be?

Hicksville does not sell single cans. Shoreline does. They’re both good stores but, gun to my head, I prefer Hicksville.

I believe they all do mixed 6 packs. I’ve never heard of a 10oz growler.. Smallest I’ve seen is 16oz which is rare. Maybe that’s a Packy thing. I agree with @guinness77 that Hicksville Beer and Soda is the best.

I never heard of the 10oz growler either until I saw it listed on their website as an option. I was def intrigued.

In case you’re interested Hicksville just got all the Toppling Goliath stuff in on Monday. Their Instagram page is updated often.

Syosset sells 10oz growlers. They sell you a small, clear glass, screw top jar and then fill it. I'd recommend asking them for a plastic bag just for the little growler because in my experience they can leak. Syosset also allows you to break any 4/6 pack in the store for a single (including boxed ones like Sixpoint). Out of what you've mentioned, I like Syosset, but their place is also a minefield of old beer (like most stores in the area) and I haven't been to some of the others you mentioned in a long time.

I typically go to two places you haven't mentioned - Beverage Barn East Meadow and Total Wine. Beverage Barn East Meadow allows you to break any 4/6 pack in the store for a single (including boxed ones) and they are very good for cans from Long Island breweries. Total Wine has dedicated singles, but you can pretty much break most things for a single too (just ask them if you're unsure). If you go there, make sure to go into their cold room in the back too.

I grew up on the Island, but I had never heard the expression "package store" until I went to school in Connecticut. We didn't have craft beer then, either.

    Cheers!

You can blame me not knowing what the colloquial term for “place to buy pre-packages beer” was on the Island

Here in NJ we have liquor stores that sell all types of booze. When I started dating my now wife who is from LI I was shocked to see beer wasn’t sold In the same place as wine or liquor. That’s a discussion for another thread, however haha.

Thank you to everyone for chiming in. Because of my time constraints I’ll need to move fast and stick to the north shore but I am def keeping a list of these places for future visits.
