Anyone working on a Long Trail Limbo IPA clone yet?

I literally cannot stop drinking this beer....I think it is the mosaic hops that I am falling in love with.

Finally had a couple during the Pats game. You can definitely taste those New Zealand hops, very fruity. It reminded me of Kiwi Rising, very clean finish. Not sure if Long Trail would switch up their yeast for just this beer but maybe they fermented cooler or cold conditioned longer. Light malt, light body, very smooth bitterness. There is a touch of sweetness but this could be just perceived from the fruity hops.

A good start might be to use the Beer Advocate Averagely Perfect IPA and use a plethora of New Zealand hops late.

Great IPA ! From their website specs, you can guestimate the grain bill. They list Bravo, Chinook, Galaxy, and Mosaic for hops so my guess is Bravo for bittering and then a gonzo, new age late-hop addition of the others along with substantial dry-hop.

Yeah, not wrrying about the grain bill so much, it was the scheduling of the hops that I really want to figure out. I have never used Galaxy or Mosaic before. I was thinking Bravo bittering, Chinook around 10 minutes, and then equal parts Galaxy and Mosaic for later hops and DH.

I guess not really trying to clone, but to get something similar and maybe max 6.5% ABV.

I also thought the hop profile was extremly close to Kiwi/ Mass Rising(I actually though it was closer to Mass Rising and actually thought Mass Rising was the better beer this year).

Mosaic hops are turning out to be a little hard to find local without spending a small fortune to order and have them shipped in. Since Mosaic is a cross between Simcoe and Nugget, could I mix the two to genrate the same of similar flavor/effect?

A little bit of a drive for you (if you are from Sparta) but its really not too bad. Also shouldnt be too terrible with shipping if you choose USPS priority mail.

Edit: Mosaic has flavors that I do not get from Simcoe or Nugget, so my instincts tell me that mixing them will not get you Mosaic. Judging by the flavor differences, I dont think it would even get you close.

Mosaic is the child of Simcoe and Nugget. It was worth a shot trying to combine them.

If you already did it keep us updated on how it turns out. It sounds like a tasty combo as it is.

But looking at other hops' pedigrees, it seems that the product is different than the sum of its parts. Take a look at Citra for example. Would you recommend a combo of Hallertau Mittelfrüh, US Tettnang, Brewer's Gold and East Kent Golding to replace Citra if it was unavailable?

farmhousebrewingsupply.com has pretty good prices on pounds. Mosaic, citra, amarillo, galaxy, simcoe, nelson, etc.

Well as it turns out, my LHBS got Mosaic and Galaxy in stock @ $3.00/oz. Good deal.

    I brewed this up yesterday.

    Mashed @ 150 for 90 minutes

    7.5 lbs American 2-Row
    7.5 lbs Marris Otter
    .5 lbs Crystal 40

    .5 oz Columbus - 60 Min
    1 oz Mosaic - 10 Min
    1 oz Mosaic - 5 Min
    1 oz Galaxy - 5 Min
    1 oz Mosaic - 2 Min
    1 oz Galaxy - 2 Min

    1 packet US-05 yeast.

    Measured OG: 1.069
Calculated IBU's: 56 (a little low but I wanted smooth)

I am going to dry hop with 1 oz each of Galaxy and Mosaic.

Smelled awesome and and initial wort sampling is promising.

Yes. It came out fantastic. One of the best, if not the best beers I have ever made. It came out at 7.5% abv but drinks like 5%. Very dangerous.

I am going to brew this again in April and change the following:

    1. Mash lower, probably 147 or 148. Came out a little sweet but that may be a due to the mosaic and galaxy combo or the lower IBU's not matching the hoppiness. Maybe drop the C-40 to 1/4 lb.

    2. I am going to change the bittering hop to Warrior or Nugget and also increase the IBU's to help balance it a little more.

    3. I want to try brewing this with Safale 04. I think it may help dry it out a bit more and to test brewing an IPA with this yeast before I try to brew the Stone Enjoy By clone I have been eyeing up.

    Here's a pic

What did you attenuation numbers look like ?
That'll tell you whether to fiddle with the recipe/yeast or with your bittering addition to gain your more perfect balance.

    Per Beersmith:
    Apparent Attenuation: 81.6%
    Real Attenuation: 67%

Couldn't ask for much more than that...I'd pursue modification route #2.
    Sounds tasty nonetheless - Cheers!
