Not sure if you've been there before, but I was there last March and the beer situation was unfortunately what I expected. The local brands need to be drank ice cold to mask the uhm, flavor. That was also the first time I saw people drink beer with ice in their glass. Embrace the rum drinks, fo'sho. Have fun!
I've been 4 times and have done blind tasting with all the lagers, can't tell them apart, but after a long hot day, they taste great to me. Not sure what part you are going to but the surf camp I've been to Witches Rock Surf Camp just opened up a brewery hotel in Arenal. http://www.prleap.com/pr/185460/ The owners are awesome.
