Im thinking of taking a day off and going on a little weekend vacation with my wife sometime in March but not sure where. I live in philly/nj area right now and obviously I'd like to check out a city with some great breweries or beer events for me and someplace fun and interesting for her. Any suggestions that would be a good balance for us? I was thinking SF since RR is there but I'd love to hear any other suggestions.

You should ask your wife where she'd like to go, not us

Ski Arapahoe Basin!! Near Dillon, CO. Good craft beer abounds.

You don't give any thoughts as to what your wife enjoys. If it were me, I would pick Portland. You were already thinking of SF, but I think Portland is a cool city and much easier to get around than SF, imo.

San Diego might be nice that time of year.

Asheville is great in April. Although it can be nasty as well. However, if you want to do it right (for the wife) get a room at Aloft, Grand Bohemian, Grove Park or Biltmore, something nice then you can hit up all the local breweries. I think Sierra Nevada might be up and running as far as tasting rooms and entertainment by then as well and its a really nice facility beyond the regular brewpubs around town. Just a suggestion for a quick weekend getaway.

Charleston, SC is also great too and April is a great month to visit there, before the heat settles in.

I'll second Asheville - it is, on top of everything else, not too far to drive from most points in PA.

Vermont has some great breweries. Can also catch some late season skiing or just enjoy the attractions the state offers.

Try DC. Good beer scene with with some great beer-centric bars and restaurants, and there's always the Cherry Blossom festivities for the wife! Plus there's tons of museums, etc.

I'd also recommend Phoenix, great weather, tons of breweries, great shopping for the wife and they have a great Brewery Tour Service called Arizona Brewery Tours that'll take to to the breweries, schedule tours and get food/samples without fearing the drive after. http://m.azbrew.com

San Diego's always a good pick too, and I hear that Ashville, NC is quite nice as well.

I'd say that the OP is right on with SF. Great hotels, food and things to do. Union square has good shopping for the mrs. After that my wife and I hope to visit DC again, Chicago, and Seattle. All great cities for both beer and culture.

Just fyi, Russian River is like an hour north of San Francisco, so you'd have to do some driving and probably spend a night in Santa Rosa, depending on how much you're drinking. I'd vote San Diego also. It's always beautiful, there's a ton to that your wife will probably enjoy (beaches, Balboa Park, La Jolla) and a TON that you, as a beer enthusiast, will enjoy. Hit a few of the breweries during the day and then go out in North Park neighborhood at night, you can walk to 8-10 world class beer bars without breaking a sweat.

Never been to San Diego, but from what I've gathered, it's a craft brew mecca. Colorado has some nice spots, but I'm sure you'd much rather warmth over cold.

    March and April?

    Another vote for San Diego.

I am the biggest Asheville fan but save that one for a little warmer and better yet--OCTOBER.

Umm, I'd avoid Chicago in late March....but I moved Sooth because I hate the cold. I live in NC and do love Asheville, but I'd pick SF, SD or Portland for sure.

Your going to need a longer weekend at best to account for time and distance in travel. Vt is an easy drive, you won't have to fly , you have a car, and you can bring home stuff with no problems, which is perhaps the biggest plus. The Waterbury, Montpelier area are very nice, some great bars and good food.
