    Hi all,

I have recently begun filling growlers due to a new brewery opening up a mile from my parent's home. I purchased two 32oz swing top growlers from them that are fantastic when I am going there to fill up. The issue is that most places I have spoken to do not like to fill the swing tops and prefer 32oz wide mouth growlers. I'm not sure how universal it is for places to fill 32oz growlers in general, so I would appreciate any feedback people have in that arena. My main question is if anybody has a recommendation for a good quality 32oz wide mouth growler?

I did some poking around and found glass ones, saw some different sized stainless steel ones, but figured I would start by hearing what other's have found. I do own two glass 64oz growlers, but my wife is doesn't drink (AND is pregnant) and I am not always able to find people to share with. A 32oz growler seemed like a great idea, but I just recently found that places aren't the biggest fans of the swing tops (NEBco was really the only place that I have dealt with on this).

    Thanks for any info!

    Sam

Unless places refuse to fill the swingtop growlers, I'd stick with those. I've never had any issues with those type of growlers.

I just grabbed one at Whole Foods for $4. Does the job. Can't find a pic of the exact one online (and I'm too lazy to take a pic) but it looks like this with Whole Foods logo:

I'd say that you are the customer and this is the vessel you are bringing in to buy THEIR beer. They should not be picky about what you are using as long as you are patronizing their brewery.

From what you've said only one store (or chain) has the problem. Stick with your swing top. They didn't refuse to fill it,so it appears to be more of a personal hassle for the employees rather than a company policy. Otherwise, check eBay. They always have growlers.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, they did simply say it was their preference to not fill narrow mouth swingtops but never said they wouldn't. They are great quality swingtops a well from Good Nature Brewery in Hamilton, NY. I'll stick with them - I find the swing top style in general to keep beer better and are more manageable at 32oz when it's just me. I never did ask the folks at New England Brewing Co. why they would prefer wide mouth ones over swing tops.

    Thanks again!

Tell that to some breweries. Triumph won't fill your growler unless it has THEIR name on it. Talk about pretentious.

I was also turned away from NEBCO this weekend. I went home empty handed since they simply said they wouldnt fill that style growler and didn't seem to care I was there trying to get beer.

Oh well, plenty of other breweries who will!

Stone has a really cool 1 liter growler that has a swing top clamp.

Wow, that is a dick move. In my city, Richmond, the breweries don't care, they just want to see the local beer scene grow and more people buying craft beer.

Yeah. I used to fill a growler to go every time we ate there. Since their growler broke and they've refused to fill my other growlers, they've lost a lot of fills over the last few years.

To the guy that got denied at NEBco.

I had a 64oz glass growler and filled it at NEBco. I had asked them beforehand about 32oz swingtops. It's still frustrating - they never did tell me why. I love their beer too much to care. They said they have some wide mouth 32oz growlers on their way. It was the first time I had ever heard of a brewery not wanting to fill a narrow mouthed liter growler.

i can tell you exactly why - but it helps if you go look at their taps. they have wide, short, bar style taps, with not a lot of space underneath - it is relatively difficult for them to wedge em under the tap and manage to fill them. with their setup, they literally cannot get a Hill Farmstead-style tall 750 mL growler more than maybe 3/4 full, and they end up spilling a hell of a lot of beer in the process. if you've been to Hill Farmstead, you'll notice they have special taps to avoid this problem - long, kind of proboscis-esque metal protrusions that get all the way into the growler to avoid all spilling.

now, the somewhat squatter 32 oz swingtops, i'm pretty sure they could actually get them in there and full - but i don't blame them for just simply saying "no 32 oz swingtops" rather than trying to explain in detail which ones they can fill and which ones they can't.

edit: replace "taps" with "faucets". you get the picture

"The faucets we have doesn't make it easy to fill them as a result of how small the mouth is on them. It makes a mess for us and you don't get a growler thats completely filled. We have our own 32 oz growlers on the way. We do try our best to accommodate all of our growlers customers beer needs."

This was the response I got on FB to my question about the swing tops which answers the question - makes sense. I will be interested to seeing what their 32oz growlers look like.

At Good Nature Brewery that fills the 32oz swing tops they use a hose attachment and make it work with almost no spilling whatsoever. I believe they have the same taps as NEBco. Just saying.

They also are rather expensive fills IIRC (over $15?), and some of the worst growler filling techniques I've ever seen at a brewery - straight from the tap, not even the use of a "bottom-fill" piece of tubing.

Are their growlers still clear glass, as well?

I have that Stone 1L growler and it's great!!!. And I am not sure what the size of the top of the growler matters as everywhere I have ever had a growler filled runs a skinny tube into the growler that fits into any opening.

not NEBCO - hence the issue.

They used to have the hose at NEBCO, someone said before (I think we had a page conversation about this in the NEBCO thread somewhere) - not sure why they don't anymore.
