This weekend I will be headed out to Kansas City to visit my brother, and one of my primary goals for the trip is to find outstanding beer that I can't get where I live (Champaign, IL). I have a few breweries in mind (Dogfish Head being first among them), but I was hoping the BA community could help me out. Can anybody who lives in the area direct me toward some of their favorite beers and good places to find them? No need to check and see if a given brewery distributes in Illinois--I'll figure that one out.
Mods, please move this to the Midwest forums so we can better help this BA Otherwise, there is no DFH in KC. Free State out of Kansas and Mothers from Springfield are both beers worth seeking out. Places to consider having a drink at: Bier Station, Beer Kitchen (awesome burgers), Charlie Hoopers, Tanners, The Foundry, McCoy's, and Flying Saucer. I'm sure some KC locals may be able to be of more assistance
No DFH in KC. However we have Boulevard, Founders, Bells, Stone, Odell available here. The Boulevard tour is great. Bier Station in Waldo is a great place to sample some rarer brews in tap and to go. Try Lukas liquor or Gomers for a good beer selection to buy. Flying Saucer downtown and various Barley's Brewhaus have huge tap selections.
Just look at the ratings of stores in the KC area. I personally liked Gomers northland in Parkville the most, but plenty of good stores, just a question of how far you want to drive. No DFH in Missouri as far as I know. Deschutes would be a great brewery to check out. Not sure what y'all get in Illinois, I was led to believe quite a bit.
Thanks for the suggestions. I can get most of the ones mentioned so far (Boulevard, Founders, Bells, Stone, Dechutes as of recently), so I guess Illinois is a pretty good beer state after all. I will definitely be hitting Flying Saucer. Sunday I will be taking the Unfiltered Tour at Boulevard.
I' d still pick a store & hit there are some new ones you may want to check out, Mother's, White River & Piney River are just a few of Mizzou brewers that have pleased me within the last year, I'm sure there are others. Free State & Tallgrass ( previously mentioned) are good to, plus others I'm sure I'm forgetting
I would hit up Lukas Liqour (KS & MO), they have solid selections. Dont know if you get this in IL, but you should grab some Tallgrass Ethos.
We have a few Tallgrass selections in stock where I work, but not that one. I'll keep an eye out for it. Looks like the selection in Kansas City will be pretty similar to what I get at home. Firestone Walker, Odell, and Avery will be the three primary breweries I'm after.
I know it's a little late, but Anton's Taproom at 16th and Main in the Crossroads has an excellent tap selection.
