I've been lurking for a while but have a need to post finally.

Will be traveling up I95 from NYC to Newport and am looking for any advice on anywhere to stop to get bottles that don't quite make it to the city.

Appreciate any advice as well as anywhere in particular to check out in RI. Will be stopping by Newport Storm on Sunday to check them out as well.

    Thanks!

There's Gray Sail Brewing in Westerly, which is right over the CT border. I think you'd get off 95 at Route 3 in Hopkinton but don't quote me on that. Haven't been there myself but they say they have tours/tasting on Saturday afternoons. I've tried two of their beers and enjoyed both.

Take a slight detour onto the Merritt (far prettier drive than 95 through southwestern CT) and stop by NEBCO for growlers of whatever's on tap at the time. You can thank me later.

    Cheers!

Grey Sail isn't exactly on/off 95, but's it's not bad; maybe 15 minutes. Small brewery, but pretty good beers and if you buy a glass, you pretty much get unlimited pours. If I recall, you take the exit for foxwoods, but go in the opposite direction. Wyoming Package is an easy on/off. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/12485

Ron Jr. was one of the first stores in RI to start pushing craft beer. If you are in Newport, hit Sandy's Liquors in Middletown: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/12108

They have really upped their game.

Foolproof has some nice seasonal beers when you get to RI. Maine beer also. IDK if you get that. If you stop in Mass I would try to find Wormtown and Cambridge Brewing Co. Yankee and Gasparro's are right off the highway on Rt1 and will probably be your best bet to find something good.

The A&P liquor store in Mystic is surprisingly good small store. I got a bottle of NEBCO Premeditated Murder there last year

I was trapped in New London for many weeks this summer and discovered that Gordon's Yellowfront on Coleman st has an awesome beer selection. Not five minutes off 1-95. Lots of old stock, so check the dates, but everything is available as singles too.

exit 6 in CT is Half full brewing
exit 15 in CT is Guvnor's brewing
exit 31 in CT is Two Roads Brewing
exit 57 is Thimble Island brewing
exit 90 in CT is Cotrell brewing
exit 91 in CT is Beer'd brewing (maybe better than NEBCO)
exit 92 in CT/RI is Grey Sail brewing in RI

there are Southport Brewing Co.'s all over but they suck

Old Thread, but I feel the need to speak my mind...
I went to the so called Guvnor's "Brewery" last night. It was god awful. From what I saw, it looks like they use this: http://www.micropub.com/ a system where they get concentrated work delivered and all they do is boil and add the manufactures ingredients and yeast...then its transferred into specially designed "kegs". There is nothing fresh, creative, or unique about this. Its just a money making scam. To top it off, the IPA I had was not good at all...it tasted exactly like their Oktoberfest - just more hops. Not surprising since its likely the same wort...oh and the wheat beer was the same color as well (with the orange slice!). Fine if its a dunkel, but, again, I think it was the same wort just diff yeast. What brewery serves their wheat with an orange peel! This whole experience made me so angry...

I work about 2 minutes from Sandy's. It's got a good selection but the store is honestly one of the most disorganized places I've ever seen. Beer mixed with wine, rows of beers mixed with other beers, cramped, tight, some old IPAs are abound. It's also fairly small so it's not one of those liquor stores you can get lost in for 30 minutes making your selection.

Your best bet for Beer'd/Cottrell/Grey Sail would be to take exit 90 and follow route 1 up through Stonington/Pawcatuck into Westerly. Malted Barley is a great place to stop in Westerly for a few craft brews and their pretzels are pretty delicious too.

I stopped at Costal Wine in (I think) East Haven and was able to pick up NEBCO there over the summer. Maybe 1/4 mile off of 95 and they had a really good selection.

Unless they have multiple locations - which I'm pretty sure they don't - Coastal Wine is in Branford, not East Haven. It is off of I-95, though.

Good store owned by the same people who own Amity Wine.

Ya we split a bunch of apps a few weeks back and they were pretty good. Place was empty on a Thursday night while Ginger Man was packed. It's really nice inside, but I won't be back for their beer.
