So I'm no beer expert (yet), but I love Trappist ales. I could drink them every night and be a happy man. But it's a pretty pricey favorite beer.

Any recommendations on more affordable relatable beers that I can get more frequently?

Assuming what you like is Belgian styles, for price, availability, and goodness (not world-class but definitely good/great) I don't know if New Belgium 1554, Abbey dubbel, and Trippel can't be beat. Typically under $10 per 6er.

For a little more money and I think some more quality (all excellent brews), Unibroue is the winner. Usually $9-13 per four pack. Great beers http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22.
From what I've seen, only larger breweries that have decent distro offer good Belgian styles for much less $ than Belgian breweries. But I'd highly encourage looking into your local brewery/brewub options for Belgian-style offerings. I'd also suggest trying North Coast Pranqster and Brother Thelonious if you haven't.

Personally, there's nothing like the thrill of discovery. With that in mind, do this:

    1. Decide what style(s) you like.
    2. Go to the beer store where singles are sold and browse.
    3. Go to the cash register and pay for it.

    Or, in the alternative:
    1. Decide what style(s) you like.
2 Go to a beer bar and request taste(s) but make sure you buy at least one beer per 2 - 3 tastes so it won't look like you just want free beer.
    3. If you like something on draft, chances are you'll like it in bottles or cans.

I second the Unibroue suggestion, I'm sure they are available nationwide and definitely worth it in my opinion. La Fin Du Monde, Maudite, & Trois Pistoles are solid choices.

Ommegang brews other than Three Philosophers run for $10/4-pack here. Three Philosophers is $15/4, still cheaper than the Trappist selection.
