Well...I personally would not have used the term "foeder" to describe the wood tank used to ferment Pilsner Urquell in the cellar brewery. The tour guide did not use "foeder" to describe this tank. I personally would just describe it as an open wooden fermenter.

For completeness below is the photo of the pitch lined wood barrel used for lagering; Jacob is pouring my beer:

Isn't that the Detroit Tigers corporate font?

(I think it's actually called Old English -- pretty common decorative font)

Yeah, that's a shot of that brewery's so-called Monk's Cellar. Probably some of those casks eventually held Ballantine India Pale Ale - since they bought their next door neighbor, Feigenspan, during WWII and merged the two facilities. Another shot of the INDIA PALE ALE font:

Ha, yeah - I would have called it "Gothic" (but font names - worse than beer styles or glass shapes). Seems the sort of font that 50-75 years ago you could find as a set of stencil in stationary or hardware stores...

(I think it looks kinda weird to use it as all Caps - even The New York Times masthead makes the other letters smaller...).

I well remember the redwood foeders at Valley of the Moon Winery in Sonoma County. As far as flavoring the effect was largely neutral. But they were very old and beautiful and were a testament to old style winemaking. They aged Zinfandel in these vessels. I loved the place because I could find big chunks of obsidian (volcanic glass) all over the place. I still have a bunch of it in my collection of crazy things!

    Good typographic artistry.

The actual font has lowercase letters in its library, but a good typographer will know just how to adjust the sizes if using all caps.

Obviously the cask titles were more for easy legibility at a distance... or, was it?:wink:

Maybe the Monk's cellar was lit by whale oil lanterns there on the ceiling for authenticity, so tough to read until you're on top on 'em.
