    Eh, why not right?

Just went back to the taproom for the first time since Dec. '18. After that visit I posted the following review so it's interesting to see what's changed since then.

    Dec. '18
    ========
    Pros
    1. They really did a great job with the space - it's a very open layout that's really inviting.
    2. There's a pizza shop right inside. Didn't eat any but they looked good.
3 Best brewery beer prices in metro Boston and maybe the state. Seriously! Much of the menu is $6 for a 20 ounce pour. The high ABV stuff is $6 for a 12 ounce pour, and one or two things were $7. Pretty brilliant.
    4. Large beer selection. They probably had about 15 or 16 things on tap.

    Cons
    1. I can't really knock them for this since they explicitly set out to be this kind of brewery from the beginning, but those taps consist of roughly 10 IPAs/, 3 stouts, and 2 lagers (one of which is hoppy). It almost feels like a caricature of complaints about places having too many IPAs on tap.
    =========

The biggest change is that they raised their prices quite a bit. Everything was now $7.50 and up and the largest pours were now 16 oz. instead of 20. Still not bad at all for the area, but no longer a head turning bargain. They have a lot more than pizza on the menu now, but everything seemed quite expensive for Woburn. $20 for a simple pizza and $15 for things like a grilled cheese with a side of tomato soup.

The other big change was that the beer offerings were much more diverse. They had a wee heavy, a winter warmer, a golden ale, a smoked helles, and a flanders red to go along with the IPAs and stouts. The golden ale was fine but unremarkable (it's the one they can). Their DDH Glorious almost literally tasted like a glass of grapefruit juice if that's your thing. I'd never tried their Angelica before and it's probably the best hoppy offering I've had from them. Lots of flavor and mouthfeel for a 5.5% ABV IPA.

It was absolutely mobbed at 5:00 on a Saturday too and it stayed that way for the couple of hours we were there. Whatever they're doing there is certainly working for them.

I had a can of Baccarat at encore casino this past week. It was pretty good. Terrible value @$12 compared Night Shift Santilli cans ($9) or a free heineken draft ($1 tip) but what can you do. Id drink it again.

Concur, the taproom remake is really nice. A long way from when they opened with just some barrels and only free tasters. But it comes with a busy crowd scene now. Still this is my favorite spot when in Boston.

I think what they're doing at the moment is being the only brewery in the area.

Winter Hill is the closest brewery 8 miles away in Somerville, and Essex Brewing in Peabody is 15 miles away.

Which is odd because it was brewed specifically for the casino.

Were you gambling and they charge you for craft beers but not Heineken?

    Really?

I've been to the "new" Lord Hobo tap room. I like it a lot, but what makes it your favorite spot in Boston?

Specifically regarding tap rooms, it's not all that unique compared to say, Nightshift's Everett location. And I still like the Everett location more too. More space, food trucks, pull down screens in each room, their coffee cart with their own roastery's coffee and desserts, Bone Up Brewing across the street and Short Path...etc. And I think Lovejoy is way better than either spot.

Just my opinion obviously, to each their own. But I was just curious.

ha ha! Yeah, that's likely no small part of it.

They could have rested on their laurels and counted on that monopoly to carry them though. But they seem to have done a good job exploiting that fact rather than simply taking it for granted.

They have a really cool tap room that looks more like a city spot than a suburbs spot, a lot of beer, and a lot of food. Given that they're the only game in (that part of) town they could have stuck with 4 kinds of IPAs, some benches, and pretzels. Their current setup will still be competitive even if anyone else opens up shop nearby.

Agree that the beer prices have creeped up from the "semi-bargain" range to "Boston" level over the past year.

Nice place, still tons of seemingly similar IPA's and Pale Ales on tap. But IMO the food is not good and entirely overpriced.

Oh ok, that's what I figured. I wanted to clarify before responding to your previous post.

I think they could have left things as is and still got SOME traffic, but not nearly the kind of traffic they have now.

Even if you're the only game in town, you still need a proper tap room. And of course Lanigan is a good businessman, and probably realized how successful the current tap room model is, and upgraded it accordingly.

And you also make a really good point, if/when another tap room opens up nearby, they'll be able to remain competitive.

While gambling they were coming around with certain options. I was told anything outside of that would not be free. It was Bud light, Heiniken, a wine, water, and a few cocktails.

That's either the rule or I had a lazy cocktail waitress. Either way Heiniken is good for me.

Well then...just saw on facebook LH is about to expand their taproom from capacity of 180 to 500 with full kitchen. Have to think they needed some sort of improved parking plan to go with it, the few times I've been since the last expansion the parking has been sketchy.

I've seen one mention on this thread but...how's the food in Woburn? I have a double date planned at the choice of the other couple at Lord Hobo. Any dishes I should avoid or need to try?

Fun fact, Lanigan, isn’t the actual C.E.O. He was voted out a few months prior. Even his distributor for the brand knew about it before he got the news. What you see now is just a face for the media.

You’re right. I’ve been trying to have the bravery in the last few months of exposing local brewers such as Lord hobo and others, that are connected to a particular distributor (who owns a portion of two local breweries that don’t sit right) that is ruining the culture here. But not everybody can be strong as Dann Paquette. Oh well.

Define "strong", strong as in a drunken twitter rant that didn't necessarily call out anyone other than a few bars and shot his brand int he foot as his own distributor was guilty of it? I assume you are you talking about the pay to play stuff? I was there that night, left right before the tweets as I remember being chastised by Paquette and his wife about my brewery choices for an upcoming Extreme Beer Fest so I left. Not the way I wanted to kick my birthday off. Also, you posting anonymously and being vague doesn't help at all. :grimacing:

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought Lanigan said in one of his Tony Robbins talks or articles (yeah, the founder of Lord Hobo is a Tony Robbins acolyte) that he gave up day-to-day management of Lord Hobo after he sold a chunk to private equity? Wanted to focus on strategy, living his life, hanging with other successful people, etc.
