Hi all, I've searched the forums for this, but I've only found conversations about No. 2... I went into my local store yesterday and I asked if they had any of the Boulevard Smokestack Series and he mentioned he had Rye-on-Rye, Saison-Brett, and one Love Child left. I bought all three, but I figured he was talking about the much talked about (on BA) Love Child No. 2, when he came out of the back with a No. 1. I see that there were only 1,392 produced...how big did I score here? I know nothing about this unexpected surprise.
From what I know, Love Child 1 was distributed to special events only and never sold in stores. What's the bottle date on the back and how much did you spend?
I'm at work right now and the bottle is at my house, so I'll reply with this info as soon as I'm back.
All the Love Child no 1 bottles were given to store owners. None of them were distributed. The owner of my store only got 2 bottles and we sell more Boulevard than anyone. I'd say it was a great find.
I hope the guy that gave it to you was the owner otherwise there is going to be a stock guy looking for a job tomorrow!
Like others said, I'd day damn good score given it's non-release to the general public. Jason and I split a bottle last week with a bunch of brewers at Deep Ellum in Allston, MA. None of us were overly impressed by it, but it was definitely fun to try it and the sharing was appreciated.
Thanks for the feedback guys. There isn't much info on the bottle, it says "This bottle is one of only 1,392 produced" and the only date on the back is "Batch Number/Best by Date: 03-2013". I paid 24$.
Great seeing you guys at the Meadhall pre-fest throwdown. I live about 2 mins from deep ellum, so I'll have to meet you guys there sometime.
my friend just told me he split a love child #1 with another friend. i was like, "are you sure it wasn't #2? that just came out," and he responded that, no, he'd thought it was #2 the whole time, until he went to recycle the bottle the next day and saw that it was #1 [sentence looks like toilet humor]. the conversation ended with him saying, "i don't know how [our other friend] got the bottle, but it was definitely #1." our other friend is not a beer store owner (in fact, on the Beer Geek Totem Pole, he's pretty far down in comparison to us).
I live in california but and originally from KS. Boulevard is my favorite brewery and every time I come back we make a trip to the Boulevard. My wife and I have become friends with someone who works there and this last trip back (June) he and I traded. I brought a Palette Wrecker, he brought a No. 1. To say the least I was blown away with thankfulness. I was not even aware of the series yet. Every friday my wife and I watch the sunset from the beach we live by and open a "better" beer. Tonight it will be No. 1 or No. 2. I will post my review of it.
i'm still waiting for the Beer King to catch on. the Beer King is the one who trades so successfully that he receives the Ultimate Beer. it seems weird, since it sounds like the former Beer King--who has basically won the game, and who could have only gotten the Ultimate Beer by embarking on the exploitative quest to be Beer King*--is just giving away the prize, but that is the true essence of becoming the Beer King: tricking someone who should know better into selling you a $5 bill for $1. --- * there's another possibility for possessing the Ultimate Beer, which is to be the Troll King. ie you somehow came across the Ultimate Beer outside of the trading game (say, you were vacationing in belgium or something), and you later discover that traders are competing to trade up the Beer Pyramid to become Beer King. this obviously presents a great opportunity to fuck with people. p.s. conversely, the other way to be the Beer King is to have "tried all the beers." in particular, "all the rare beers." once you've tried enough beers, so the lore goes, you eventually pass into a new status where people suddenly give a shit. this has yet to occur, but beer trading is still a growing religion.
