i am considering a Baltic porter, using a lager yeast. I'd make about 2.5 gallons of a low gravity lager to build up my yeast. My first thought was a smash lager, trying out the newly available Barke Pilsner malt, but am interested in alternative ideas.

How is a Baltic porter low gravity?
Anyway, I brewed this recently, it's not finished but showing lots of promise. It's along the lines of SA Boston Lager. You could easily sub in your Pilsner malt.

    OG: 1.049, 27 IBU
    68% Weyermann pale malt
    20% Vienna
    5% Melanoiden
    8% Caramunich III 56L
    1 oz Tettnang 4.5%AA @60
    1 oz Hallertau 2.6%AA @10
    1oz Tettnang @10
    WLP830
2 oz Hallertau - Dry hop

    I really like that idea!

I am a fan of the new Barke Pilsner malt as in the Summit Keller Pilsner that is out now.

Permit me to suggest Huell Melon as the hop.

    Cheers!

Sounds like he wants to do a low gravity lager as a starter for the Baltic Porter.

Sorry if the idea wasn't clear. I'm looking to make a starter-strength lager to build up the yeast cell count to make a high gravity Baltic porter. As an example, I could be drinking a light helles in a fall, and a Baltic porter in the winter.

I attended a Summit pouring at a local beer shop a couple weeks back. They did not have this beer with them, but their marketing guy did mention it too me in a conversation. I didn't put it all together until now, but he described the grist as utilizing an heirloom malt from Germany. Does this beer use Huell Melon, or is that your inspiration?

I think a 1.040 something pils with Saaz sounds pretty tasty. Maybe a touch of crystal, if you're into that kind of thing.

Peter, a brewpub local to me recently brewed a Pilsner that was solely hoped with Huell Melon hops and I really enjoyed that beer so that was my inspiration for making that suggestion.

It also turns out that Summit used some Huell Melon hops (along with Tettnang) to brew their 30th Anniversary Keller Pils. You can read more here: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/new-beer-sunday-week-594.433764/#post-4891049

    Cheers!

Just used Huell Melon in my 3.2% ABV Blonde. It's a really flavorful hop that allows the malt to still show through. Great suggestion.

I have yet to homebrew with Huell Melon but every commercial beer that I have had which uses this hop I have liked. Granted, I have only had a few Huell Melon beers so far.

    Cheers!
