CW BB stout is my go to BA stout - love that sub 10% abv for week nights!

right & to take a guess, the difference in abv between the two iterations likely relates to the alcohol that's naturally retreated from the barrel-wood into the beer solution.

as drtth mentioned - it would seem heftier bases are preferred for barrel-aging, but i think there is the fact that putting beer in wet barrels results in a higher abv finished product too. bringing the abv down through blending (non BA stout) would likely kill off some of the barrel related nuance. also since it's been said most programs add coffee on top & doing so drops the existing abv. good chance @mambossa 's 8% example is down a percent or more due to the coffee.

It's definitely not the lowest, but Sixpoint's BBA 3 Bean's hits in at 10.10%. It barely cuts into the double digit range, although that is considered high for some.

It certainly drinks a lot thinner than the ABV suggests though.

Barrel aging does increase ABV quite variably, and also barrel aging takes away from the body of an already-full-bodied brew.

You’re right in the sense that adding cold brew can dilute the beer in a sense, but it’s all dependent on size and technique. Sometimes breweries will add whole beans. The beans having the potential to soak up beer could concentrate it. Cold brew can dilute it but impart more flavor.

There’s a lot of give and take on that front

Griffin claw brewing (michigan) just released downtown bourbon brown. It's a 5.5% abv brown ale with solid bourbon barrel flavor. I bought it thinking it would be an imperial, but it is still pretty decent. Has a good full flavor.
