Anyone have any recommendations for lower ABV saisons? Perhaps with a little bit of tartness but not a "sour." My wife had some of my Crooked Stave Vielle the other day and she absolutely loved it. Looking for other examples of a traditional lower ABV saision.

    Thanks.

Tallgrass's Songbird, and Suttynose's Hayseed both fit the bill.

Prairie Ales has a few in the <5% range, but if your looking for a tart but not sour I like Dupont at around 6+%

I also recommend Smuttynose Hayseed as it sounds like what you're looking for https://smuttynose.com/beer/hayseed/

Keep an eye out for beers labeled as "grisette" too. They aren't very common, but if you see them they are typically low ABV beers fermented with French or Belgian saison or farmhouse yeasts. Usually grisettes are not sour, but there can be exceptions.

    EDIT:
FWIW, Hill Farmstead calls their Clara a grisette.

Although Beer Advocate doesn't have a specific beer category for grisette, you can find a bunch with a general beer search for grisette.

For you up in Mass, Prairie provides some excellent options to fit that bill. Several have a little funk going on and several offer some dry hopped additions which are very tasty in combination.

Agree with the Prairie suggestions. If you do like some tartness Jolly Pumpkin has a bunch of quality sub-5% offerings. I also recently had Ommegang Glimmerglass that I thought was very approachable.

Any of Council's Fruit Saisons are great and are between like 3 and 5 percent

Two Roads Workers Comp. 4.8% and comes in six packs. Believe they distribute to MA. Could be more on spicy side vs tart, been some time since I drank a bottle.

Not necessarily tart, but North Coast Puck is a good Saison and only 4%. And I second the recommendation for Ommegang Glimmerglass (5.4%).

I suggest taking a day trip from Mass to O.E.C. in Oxford, CT they make tart /and or sour saison. Most part only make sour/wilds.

My understanding is that Saison always was a low ABV drink ,brewed for farm labourers with an allowance of 8 pints a day while working. They wouldn't get much done with present day so-called Saison !
