AKA Lublin or Lubelska....anyone tried these? Supposedly has aromas of lavender and magnolia from high levels of farnesene. Some descriptors include bergamot and lemon, depending on when they're harvested. I ordered a pound on a whim, and to get free shipping floor on an order of other stuff.
A number of years ago I tried to obtain Lublin hops to use when brewing a batch of Grodziskie but none of the vendors (LHBS, online stores) carried it. In e-mail exchanges with Stan Hieronymus he recommended that I just use Czech Saaz to brew this beer. For this beer style I doubt that I would pick up aspects of "lavender and magnolia" since the smoky flavor from using 100% smoked wheat malt would likely be dominating. Maybe brew up a 'light' beer like a Blonde Ale with these hops and see what you get? Please report back. Cheers!
Ive used them several times. Twice in a pilsner and once in a helles. The floral aspects can be a bit much on its own. Gives the beer a nice but somewhat odd taste.
If memory serves me correct these are noble-adjacent and best used as a noble variety. So a pilsner or perhaps a German wheat. It's been many years since I went with them and they are not the most common variety. It's a good thing you ordered a pound. AA is also old world. I can say I don't recall not liking them, that much I would remember. I am all for a full on SMASH, use the entire pound. Maybe cheat and drop an early addition of Magnum to bump the bittering a bit, save the Lublin for late additions, flame out maybe even dry hop. Why not? These noble low AA types make excellent hop bombs with none of the harshness that is typical of the more assertive varieties. I am thinking it's time for me to do the same, soon. Cheers.
That crossed my mind when reading about and ordering them, even picked up some magnum on the same order for that purpose. Might or might not use the entire pound of Lubelski tho'....brew day will that tale.
