I wonder what the value of the original bottling of Luscious is? Did its value depreciate due to the recent canning run?
I assume you have batch 1 and are looking to assess trade potential? Which one tastes better? Do they taste the same? If the answer is they are just as good or the can run tastes better (maybe just due to freshness) then the answer to any sane person should be "yes." The reason I say this is it doesn't seem like the demand has gone through the roof. My take is that the only time the value of an older batch should increase in value is if A) the previous batch was simply better and / or B) the new batch serves as a sort of marketing tool, increasing demand wildly. Now, that's speaking of sane / rational people. There may be sentamentalist tickers out there that need batch 1.
I have had both recently and the first batch held its own nicely. That being said the latest (canned batch) was outstanding. Considering everything, I would still prefer batch 1 to most other imperial stouts, but currently batch 2 is a superior brew.
I got one in the last year or so for an '08 Darkness... I know I was very happy with the trade. That said, I would love to score some of the cans. Big ole RIS in cans are my ideal wave of the future. As far as value goes, Kurmaraja is probably right... There are fewer and fewer of us "sentimental tickers" out there.
You missed C) The beer is one that will change over time and the age itself adds value (gueze, for example)
Couple of points: I see your ISO: in the trade forums, & no amount of Luscious is ever going to pull an '07 Darkness. There were (if memory serves, & it's rusty) only 600 bottles & I'd suspect 90% plus have been consumed at this point. There's a huge difference in trying to trade for an '07 Darkness vs. any other year. And it looks like you've only done a few trades, so I don't mean this rudely, but if you banish words like "depreciate" from your beer vocabulary, trading will be a lot more fun. Beers shouldn't be a commodity that can be tracked on a NYSE ticker. Trading with guys who become friends is a ton more fun than trying to figure out precisely how much value you can wring out of your beer.
Looks can be deceiving. I have been trading for a long time on BA. I only have 6 recorded trades on this new system. What other word would one use in place of depreciate? It is a fact of life beers fall off, beers get remade and their value is affected. As to your comments on trading partners who become friends I have plenty of those so please don't worry about me good sir. The value I am trying to "wring" out of my beer is to try and complete a vertical to treat my tasting group to a full set of 07-14 Darkness. If my trade offer falls short it falls short. I know my offer is a long shot.
