In the doc "Beer Wars" there was a beer highlighted called "Wild Hop". It was marketed as an organic craft brew but was actually an AB product. It didn't list that it was an AB product on the bottle or packaging however. I am wondering how many, if any, beers like this are out there masquerading as craft with no link to BMC on packaging etc. Any info would be great! Oh yeah, no Goose Island replies please. Lol

It was an organic product based on USDA criteria, no?

Honestly, I don't even know that much about wild hop. I was just wondering if there are other mysterious beers out there like it.

    AC Golden Beers = Coors

That said, AC Golden beers can be pretty damn good. Tried the AC Sour a couple months back and it was great.

My point isn't whether it was actually organic but rather it was made by AB but listed on bottle as some other name

Blue Moon - Coors. Of course beer geeks know that, but a lot of non-beer geeks do not.

Why do you care? Its not exactly hard to find out that it is brewed by a company that is owned by A-BInBev. So are lots of other beers. There are also lots foods in your local grocery store (probably some you buy) that are made by someone other than the people who own the label. Do you worry about them too?

Yeah, it's really not obvious that Blue Moon/Shock Top are macro products. They also try to market Heineken and Stella as high-quality imports. It's really not a new game for them.

I care because they're taking away marketshare from authentic craft breweries and it is deliberately deceptive.

I thought the one in "Beer Wars" was a perfect example - whatever it was called, Green Valley or what not. They intentionally leave off the A-B on the packaging because they know that a significant # of craft consumers will not buy it if it is A-B (otherwise it makes no sense, especially given how good the A-B name is overall as far as most American beer consumers).

There are others on the shelves. I look up and down the packaging because it is a brewery name I haven't heard of, but then when I look it up on my smart phone it's one of the BMC's with yet another faux-craft brewery name or beer.

If a craft aficionado buys it because they don't know, and actually likes it...then what?

There are a few reasons I care. I really didn't post to try and debate. Just wanted to know what's out there since I'm in CT I wanted to know what may be in other states.

    Really? Deception???

Do you feel the same way about the milk you buy in the grocery store? Do you feel the same way about any store brand product? They take up shelf space and market share as well. And its actually easier to find out who brewed the beer and who owns that beer label than it is to find the name of the farm where the milk you drink was produced. Do you really want the chain of ownership specified on each and every thing you buy?

Please answer - why do you think A-B leaves off their name on a craft-looking product?

Dude, not for nothing, but this isn't "Milk Advocate". And who in their right mind compares milk to craft beer??? And me not caring about what tactics they are using to try and push the breweries and beers I love off the shelf would be irresponsible.

No; that's why we're on BeerAdvocate and not MilkAdvocate.

To be honest I had no idea Blue Moon was made by Coors until I joined this site two years back. First time I had it was back in 2003. Not sure when I found out about Shock Top although that hasn't been around as long.

You bought them thinking they were micros, right?

Actually thanks, I just decided I will no longer use milk in my cereal. I'm gonna replace it with beer of course.
