My ex's middle name lined up with 2/14 and she grew up with it being "Middle Name Day" where she was treated extra special beyond normal Valentine's stuff. Told her that if we did that, I got to have a middle name day as well, so either St. Rupert's day, where I was entitled to a minor feast, or Robbie Burns day, and I got to drink a bottle of Scotch. Middle name day stopped being a thing.

"Oh Robbie, ye asked for bread, and they give ye a stone"- That poor fucker's mother seeing a statue of him being erected in Edinburgh.

On a certain level all holidays are "made up." Celebrate whatever makes you happy

So that type of marketing I guess explains why American teens and young adults got so big into Binge drinking in the 70’s and 80’s. Movies like Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds etc didn’t help either.
