Yup, the only issue with Tipsy Cow is that it tends to get packed. But you can't beat the prices for the quality of beer on tap. I stopped there after work last Friday and got a 10oz pour of DFH WWS for $6. And their food is very good too. In terms of quality of beer taps, Dexter's might be a slight notch above, but they charge you more on the level of what you would expect to pay for the beer. If they had DFH WWS, pricing would have probably been $5-6 for a 4oz pour & $10-12 for an 8oz. Their food is also really good.

I actually haven't been to Steve's on Mineral Point. Steve's on University & Steve's on McKee are both good, but I haven't really found anything at them that you can't find at Jenifer St Market or Riley's. I would recommend Riley's in particular because you never know what you're going to find there. They seem to randomly pull stuff out of their cellar and put it out on the shelf for sale. From your hotel, it looks like you can walk to Riley's, just 1 block away.

If you like funk music & a local band called The Moustache happens to be playing while you are here, I recommend checking them out too.

Glad you liked our store when you came in last...we've actually moved less than a block down the road, into a bigger space with more beer coolers. If you decide to stop in, make sure to ask for Dan (me) and I can help you pick out some good stuff. If not, no hard feelings either, there are a lot of good recommendations in this thread (I'm partial to Brasserie V's food and beer list btw).

Ale Asylum and Karben4 are very close in locations. Both have great food and brews.

I've gotta throw Heritage Tavern into the mix for food. Pretty new but Dan Fox knows what he is doing. He is the main guy behind SloPig. Another must event for a foodie.

Brasserie V is a nice spot for dinner and they have awesome beers. If your looking for awesome food Jolly Bobs has some of the best food around IMO. If you like Jamaican/Caribbean food you gotta stop there. My only other suggestion would be to stop by Vintage brewing.

BTW Jolly Bobs doesn't look like much from the outside or the inside for that matter but it was recommended to my friends and I by a chef and restaurant owner and I was not disappointed. Plus if its warm out their back patio is a pretty awesome place to have a meal.

No offense at all to Jolly Bob's, as I've had friends work there as both servers/bartenders, but that is probably the last place on Willy Street that I would go to eat. Very specific crowd hangs out there depending on the night, has a lot to do with the DJ that's spinning but it can get a bit rowdy from what I've seen. Take my opinion with a grain of salt though, I've been working on Willy for a while.

While it's not cheap, I'm surprised you guys have BA Old Numbskull and BA Wee Heavy on the shelves here in Madtown. I picked up a Rye Barrel Old Numbskull from Jenifer street market

Brickhouse had on Pseudo and Tsunami, as of two days ago. You can usually find their stuff at Brickhouse, Brasserie V, Dexters, and Craftsman.

Coopers Tavern on the square has PseudoSue on tap, pretty much all the time. Just checked Untapp'd and there are recent check-ins today.

As for the one brewery to visit, I second Karben4. Fantasy Factory is where it's at.

Wanted to bump this thread and not create a whole new one. I've been to Madison a handful of times but have only stayed over night once. A group of us are staying one night on our way up to Darkness Day and was wondering what area is the best place to stay that's in walking/short cab ride distance to the best bars and/or breweries? Thanks for the help

I like the hilton a lot, your are right off the square close to some pretty good spots. Both beer and non-beer destinations.

The Hampton inn is a real nice hotel as its new and pretty affordable. There is a restaurant attached to it that does breakfast all day so that is real conveinet. You are the best this location isnt a hot bed of activity but you are real close to Bricks BBQ and Rileys world of Wine so that is a huge bonus. The hyatt is nice but not an ideal walking location.

Not sure I'd agree with that, but whatever. Short of miserable weather, they're all fine for walking

Whatever you do, don't pass up Karben4. Also worth stopping at Showboat Saloon if you're driving through the Dells at an hour when they're open. Trust me on that one.
