i'm headed up to new glarus/madison area this weekend to pick up some of the thumbprint wild sour ale & hopefully, some of the strawberry rhubarb. as a fan of new glarus & having recently been stricken with a sour affliction, i'm super excited to try both. BUT, not wanting to waste an opportunity, i'm also curious if there are any other notable sours in the areas worth seeing out - either local breweries, on tap, or even through WI distribution. thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Best store sour selection would be Riley's or Jenifer St Market. You likely won't find anything ridiculous, but they have the best variety from my experience. For taps, Brasserie V has a sour or two on tap on occasion, and several sour bottles; check their website for current taplist and bottle list: www.brasseriev.com
Last time I was at brasserie v in May they had a bottle of 2010 still nacht reserva for 48 dollars don't know if its still there but id ask if you go or you could call them too I suppose.
Maybe our definition of ridiculous differs but I've seen 3F golden blend at Riley's before so you can get lucky sometimes with them. It was a 37,5 for $26 so not cheap but still thought that was pretty ridiculous that they even got any in the first place.
on right now - holy googly moogly: Mini Tap Takeover The Bruery Placentia, California Try a Sampler of all 4 … $13 Hottenroth Berliner Weisse $6 This tart German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We used lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. 3.1% ABV Humulus Lager $6.50 Humulus Lager is an India Pale Lager brewed with 4 lbs. of hops per barrel. This beer is all about the hops-- the lager yeast allows the hops to be in the forefront. 7.2% ABV Rugbrød $6 Meaning "rye bread" in Danish, this beer took inspiration from the Danes' staple dark, whole-grain rye bread. Brewed with three types of rye malt, this robust brown ale showcases the earthy, spicy character of the grain, complemented by bready, nutty barley malts. 8% ABV White Oak* $8 a blended beer-- 50% wheatwine aged in Bourbon barrels (we call it "White Oak Sap"), and 50% Mischief (our Golden Strong Ale). Vivid caramel, coconut and vanilla flavors blanketed in a crisp yet robust wheat ale, White Oak is really something special! 12% ABV
Four pounds of hops per barrel? Nom Nom...Yet to try that one but it sounds awesome. Brasserie V is so freaking awesome, one of my favorite stops in the Midwest, and I'd put it up there with Hop Leaf, Hop Cat, Happy Gnome, and the likes...
thanks everyone's recommendations/suggestions. we found that jenifer st market & Riley's were spot on in terms of selection. to JRocco's point - we were able to pick up some of the 3F golden blend at Riley's which I haven't been able to find prior. Expensive, yes - but having a chance to snag a couple bottles - a nice surprise. Brasserie V was awesome. Cuvée Des Jacobins Rouge was simply incredible.
