I'll be in Spain walking the Camino in August/September. I'll be in Madrid September 11-14. I will be covering the Madrid beer scene for a Texas beer magazine.

What should I not miss? Anyone have any contacts in Madrid?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'll get back to you sometime early this week, I currently live in Málaga (Southern coast of Spain) and I frequent a Belgian Bar here run by a Romanian guy who knows his stuff, he has worked at several Cervecerias in Madrid I will ask him what's good and post his reply here in a few days. He said it's common to find Westvleteren 12 for around 25e in Madrid if that interests you (he has it has bar for 13e, I bought all of them haha), or if you're more interested in the Spanish craft scene. Cheers

Just got to this site a couple days ago and signed up just to give some info here since I'm from Madrid.

Madrid craft scene is small for the city's size. The local comercial brand is Mahou but there is a fair presence of every big spanish brewer plus some european ones. Tap is traditionally served very cold in small 20cl glasses (cañas) as many people see beer less as an alcoholic beverage than as a refreshment. There is a dwinling number of belgian-style bars and a growing number of irish ones.

In Pza Santa Ana you can find Naturbier, a german restaurant-bar with it's own two (or three?) homebrews, quite uncommon here. In c/Cardenal Cisneros there is a small bar called Oldenburg that boast over 200 different beers on it's menu.

The two only craft brewers in Madrid that I know of are Cibeles and La Virgen. The first one is easier to find in bars but both are slowly finding their own markets. La Virgen brewery does open it's Tap Room thursday, friday and saturday, usually with hot dogs and spanish ham to soak the beer. It's in a town outside Madrid tho so you might need a car to get there (there's public transportation of course, about half an hour bus ride from Moncloa sq).

I am sure the moment I post this I will remember something else to add...

A bit late, but it may useful for someone else:
-Close to Bilbao Square: "Animal", 8 taps pouring craft beer from Europa and US. "Oldenburg", a must in the city, with the old and new place so close, with good classic selection. "L´Europe", now focusing in Spanish craft.
-Close to that area: "Cervezorama" a really nice bottle store, and "La Tape", craft beer and nice food.
-Close to Gran Via: "Irreale", craft beers on tap, and "Fábrica Maravillas", brewpub.

Madrid beer scene is just starting to awake.

The Madrid craft beer scene is growing quite fast and they will open several breweries quite soon. Mad Brewing will be the leading one.

Fabrica Maravillas is a nice brew pub and Irreale close to it is also nice.

Madriz Hop Republic has 8 craft beers on tap and serves vietnamese tapas. It is worth a visit.

In the same area LEurope, Kloster, Oldenburg and the great shop, Beer Garden are also a nice visit

Been a while since the last post here... I'll be in Madrid on Saturday night. Any recommendations that may have opened since the last post? We're staying in Sol.
