    To my knowledge a Wieß is simply a Jungbier, possibly in the process of carbonation.

    Full disclosure: This is Wikipedia and the BJCP (for what they're worth):
    So one source does say it's a Jungbier, but still considers it Kölsch.

    Just read your review, thanks for the link. I'm a bit confused though, you rated the Summertime much higher, but said the Experimental is redundant because of its similarity to the former. And you then rated the Experimental much lower than the Summertime.

    Were there some differences? (I might pick up this mix, I like their IPA too)

    For some reason, I associate the Wieß with Federweiß, which is also Jungwein in the middle of fermentation. Duly noted, my own connection, nothing to back that up.

    I only called the Experimental redundant because now they have two beers they're saying are "best" for summer enjoyment -- "...perfect for the summer season..." Really? Then why is your other beer called Summertime? :astonished:

    The Experimental Lager and the Summertime are definitely different. The Summertime has more body and a different hop character. The Experimental is really rather thin all around and seems to be an attempt to attract the macro crowd, but if you pick up the pack you can give us your perspective.

    One thing to note is that the Summertime BA profile needs updating; it's now 5.1% and has a slightly different character. I actually think it's closer to a true Kölsch than the original rendition, but the original was always a seasonal favorite for my friends and me and I miss it.

    Sort of like Eisbock and Eiswein? :wink: Though those processes do have a little similarity -- just different points where the freeze is utilized.

    Ron Pattinson used the term “Wiess” on his website:

    “Hellers Wiess 4.5% 11.7º An unfiltered version of the Kölsch.”

    Wiess is an unfiltered version of Kölsch. It can't be called Kölsch because the convention says it has to be filtered.

    Just like a "New England style IPA" is an unfiltered version of a West Coast IPA. It can't be called a West Coast IPA because...oh, never mind. :wink:

    There are a few Kölschbrewers who make an unfiltered Kölsch, but these days, I think Hellers is the only one actually calling it "Wieß". Braustelle is advertising their Helios simply "unfiltriert und obergärig"; then you have Sünner which sell their unfiltired Kölsch as "Kellerbier"- their used to be an unfiltered,oganic Kölsch called "Sünner Bio Colonia", but sadly it's not there anymore.
    There used to be the brand "Kölner Wieß" produced by Dom, back when they still had their own brewery.
    I find it difficult to say "Unfiltered Kölsch is called Wieß" When only one brewery is actually calling their unfiltered Kölsch "Wieß"...

    Braunbier as Märzen/Okto? Wouldn't it fit better under Munich Dunkel (even though I know it isn't really that either)?

    It's 5.6%. Bamberg Braunbier "style." Thought Märzen/Okto fit best...also from a taste/flavor perspective. Hmmm...

    Other than the obvious Braunbier at Klosterbrau, would you say Keesmann Sternla, Mahr's ETA Hoffman, or Faessla Zwergla also fit that mold?
