I thought you were in Charlotte?

Nope. Columbia, SC. Generally we have a very low cost of living. Not for my all-time favorite beer, though. :slight_frown:

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I still feel like I'm missing someplace important though... Good luck with the "re-adjustment" to the US. And just remember that, even though you can't get a decent Schlenkerla within 2 hours, you probably have 300 different IPAs within 10 minutes. You know, as I was typing that, it sounded like a good thing...

I am confused! Where do you get all that Old Meck from? I thought they were a Charlotte-only operation?

We are their first -- and so far only -- external distribution point. Before that I used to drive up and purchase...frequently by the keg. 3 hours round trip. Sometimes you gotta do whatever it takes in the Land of Opportunity!

1.5 hours each way is not so bad. HD to Düsseldorf was 2 hours, 15 minutes each way by ICE. Good alts are worth the trip! (although at least we did have the option to mail order in Germany)

But...I want everything available to anyone anywhere to be on the shelves of my local bottle shop!!!

Seriously, though, I agree. Well worth the trip. Especially when their new Brauhaus opens in a couple of weeks! Heading up to the VIP event this Saturday, matter of fact. (But spending the night...so only a 1.5 hr trip.) Prost!

Well the two famous college bars - Zum Roten Ochsen and ... the other one whose name I'm forgetting but it's right next door ... I don't know what beers they serve, probably Heidelberger. And you forgot to mention to avoid Klosterhof at all costs.

Zum Roten Ochsen also had a restaurant up in Handschusheim but it's been closed for a bit now.

    I suppose I've traded in Pils/Hell/Export for APA/IPA/DIPA...

I got a small package out of the blue a couple of days ago from a former BA. Inside were two cans of New England Brewing Company's Elm City Pilsner and a note indicating that these are this person's go-to and that the cans should be in optimal condition. The person asked me to try them out and post my opinions so, here goes....

[IMG] (note: not my pic. mine poured clearer despite being well-chilled)

From the can: "Have you had a craft-brewed German Pilsner? At NEB we brew this traditional style with traditional German malt and noble hops. Clean, dry, and hoppy! We protect our delicate yet flavorful pilsner by packaging it in this protective, lined can. Drink it. It's good!"

    Hmmm. That's a lot of "tradtional(s)"....

Short and sweet review: this is as good a U.S. "craft" brewed pilsner as I have had. Lovely bready malts capped by floral hops (with just the slightest hint of citrus/lemon/mandarin). Quite clean and effervescent. Understated without being at all "boring." The brewers show a pretty deft touch with this one. Reminiscent of Troegs Sunshine Pils. If this were available to me at a reasonable price, it's be one of my go-to's. Cheers to Matt K. for sending.

Good news, everyone. The place that was 2 hrs, 45 mins away is a distributor or wholesaler as it turns out and sent me a list of stores "in my area" that have Schlenkerla. The two closest are both about 25 miles away. A third one is closer to 35 miles away. Other stores are too far even more my dumb self to drive to. But the hunt is on. Let's hope it's fresh, cheap, and available by the case!

"Let's hope it's fresh,.." Yup, because the Schlenkerla beers sold in the US have no dates on them. All we have is "hope" in this instance.

    Cheers!

Hey, can any of my Germany Forum compatriots tell me how Sam Adams Oktoberfest may taste to someone who is used to the Munich Oktoberfests? I saw a 6-pack in the local Kroger's and passed on it, but then I thought I'd put the question to you all. Cheers...

Matt, I have a job for you while in America, a purpose in life, so to say ... take over my quest of finding any and all German style beers and tell us if any them reach the lofty standards of the best you had in Germany.

Hmmm. Sounds expensive. I had a somewhat local Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yella Pils - a beer whose name length, at least, the Germans can be proud of - but I didn't love it. To be fair, I was comparing it to the German pilsners that I've had although this website lists it as a Czech Pils. For whatever that is worth. We were at a restaurant and the heathens served it to me in a can. What the hell, America.

I also had a collaboration brew between Cigar City & New Belgium. We were at a BBQ place and I was eating ribs, so I didn't even notice the pepper in the beer. At the end of my meal my mouth was burning a little bit, but I had chalked it up to the ribs. In retrospect, it was actually probably the beer. It wasn't bad, although usually not my thing - definitely worked with the ribs. And certainly no German homologue to compare it to.

I have spent literally $1000s on this very project. And I can count on one hand the examples that even got close. Maybe you can do like Stone and start a Kickstarter fund to raise the money for it?

I will have to think of a better title than "Help Me Prove German Beer Is Better Than American Beer"...
