Any cap collectors have a certain magnet they use to put caps on a fridge or elsewhere? I recently ordered these magnets from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001ANVAHI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but they are a bit small and don't secure the caps very tight. I'm looking for a little large magnet and am wondering what others have used. Thanks!
Your magnet choice would be good if it was thicker, because the Neodymium is pretty much as strong of a magnet that you can get at a hobby price. Did you put a spacer inside the cap to allow the magnet to protrude outward from the back? If you didn't, I'll suggest a balsa wood spacer that is a quarter inch thick (basically the depth of a cap). That will get the magnet protruding out the backside, and will keep the sharp points from the cap's edge from scratching your fridge. Here is my method to make cap magnets, so you can adapt the process or materials to your magnets if you want: I get 3' long strips of balsa wood from Hobby Lobby or Michael's that are one-eighth thick by three-eights inch wide, and I cut them into three-eights inch pieces. I use silicon sealer (found in caulking tubes in a home store, or smaller tubes are available in the store's hardware section) to glue the wood inside the cap, and then to glue the magnet to the spacer. This spacer allows the magnet that I use to protrude about an eighth of an inch from the backside of the cap. (Your magnets are thinner, so there will be a little less protrusion.) The magnet that I use can be found at Hobby Lobby or Michael's or Wal-Mart, and is a 'ceramic disc' type of magnet rather than the Neodymium, so it isn't quite as strong, but it definitely gets the job done. Depending on which store, these come packaged with 50-52 magnets, and are a quarter-inch thick and either three-eights or a half-inch in diameter. Usually the price is about $8.
I got some strong little silver magnets that I superglued on to the caps just to make sure they'd stay on. Put them on my fridge and when I moved them a while later there was some sort of corrosion or something on the outer layer of the paint on my fridge. No idea what caused it. Ruined part of the finish.
Were the points of the caps digging into the paint, or did you give the caps some clearance with spacers or the thickness of the magnet? Sharp points digging in is my best guess.
It seemed more like a chemical reaction. I thought somehow the glue and the magnets did it. It was like dried toothpaste on the door of the freezer. I wiped it off, but it was like it eroded the clear coat.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CEAASWY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Very strong and attracts to both the cap and a metal surface. No gluing needed. At 8 cents apiece, it the best deal I've seen
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DD5FE8M/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I bought these to attach magnets to my beer fridge. I did glue them, but they work pretty well and are cheap.
That's a helluva deal. Are those so wide that they are too close and stick to one side of the cap, or do they stay centered?
Get mine from Michael's craft (artsy fartsy, not beer) when they have the 50% off coupons floating around. 50 magnets for $5-ish. They are super strong, but I put a spacer in between the mag and cap. I've bought some caps pre-made online and they didn't put a spacer, just destroys a fridge surface. No idea why you wouldn't use a spacer. I've got probably 700 on my fridge(s).
Hobby Lobby. Craft - ceramic magnets 3/4". 50 for $7.99. They have a "magnet strength rating" of six out of ten.
