Summit Maibock is really good, and it's out now. Probably my son's favorite beer, and he actually knows what he's talking about - other than his inexplicable love for Steel Reserve. That I do not get.

Definitely a good one, and leans to the heavier side, but do they distribute as far as New Jersey? Hell, it's hard to find it around Northern Illinois anymore. :slight_frown:

Pug Ryan's Helles is a hellesbock that is quite tasty as well.

Sadly, no Straub in NJ - it barely makes it to eastern PA/Philla. region and that's only been in last few decades (and doesn't sell well enough that one can easily find it fresh). IIRC, Straub's distribution is limited to PA and OH.

Straub's Maibock is indeed very tasty but as JK mentions above, Straub's does not distribute to NJ.

I would encourage Pennsylvania and Ohio BAs to seek out the Straub's Maibock: a very tasty beer at a reasonable price (plus fresh right now!).

    Cheers!

Until a few years ago that would have been no loss. they really stepped up their game on the German styles!

I had the pleasure of drinking the Sly Fox Maibock served via cask (gravity pour) at last year's event. Boy, that beer was extremely tasty!!

Cheers to the Sly Fox Bock Fest & Goat Race!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yeah verily!!

I thought the Hefeweizen and German Pilsner that was part of the Summer variety pack were very, very good.

I also really liked the Helles that was part of the recent Winter seasonal variety pack. The Doppelbock was nicely done but a tad too sweet for my palate.

    Cheers!

I don't believe they distribute to the East Coast, but that is why the beer gods created the beer trade.

I agree, very big for a Maibock, but I really enjoy it. It pairs up well with chilly Minnesota spring evenings.

Their Straub Beer (now called "American Lager") is probably the only AAL I've bought more than 1 sixpack of in the past 35 years or so - bought many cases of steinie and long neck deposit brown bottles as well as the old 'select' style greenies when they were packaged in plastic bags instead of cardboard sixpack holders. :grinning: (Go through my garage or cellar and you can still find Straub bags full of miscellaneous stuff...).

OP - if you can find it and it's well-kept, you should try Einbecker Mai-Ur-Bock, one of the original maibocks.

I agree on the Glissade. I'd also like to see the Beer Camp Yonder Bock become a seasonal release.

I live about 30 mins from Stoudts, and I've still never had that one. It surprises me how little I see their beers in bars around here. I'll have to look for it.

    A second to this.

With High Point's Ramstein beers you can trust what you've heard. I haven't had all of their beers by any means as they are fairly hard to find out of sight of the brewery, but those I've had, including their Maibock, are so well done they automatically are my first choice when I happen to find a place in the Philly area with one on tap.

I enjoyed Les Trois Mousquetaires' take on the style.

For those in the Midwest, a little bad news in a thread bump:

So... my favorite micro-brewery (yeah, I'm old school) has been Capital Brewing out of Middleton (Madison), WI for many years. They've been known for brewing terrific German-style beers for many years -- decades.

In the past few years there's been shake-ups with their long-time brewmaster leaving to start his own brewery, a second brewmaster taking the helm in the interim, and attempts at expanding their portfolio to attract the current beer geek (read: more stabs at IPAs), but their core brews have remained pretty steadfast -- up to, and including, a recent revival of their Dark Doppelbock that was pretty outstanding.

So... when I saw the current incarnation of their traditional spring seasonal, Maibock -- a long-time favorite, I was quick to snap up a six pack. Well, in an testament to the ups-and-downs that can infect the small brewing business, I can honestly say that something has gone terribly awry in Middleton. The latest incarnation looks the part; a deep, clear golden color with a thick white head -- but everything resembling a Maibock falls to the side after that. There's some light, spicy noble hop character in the nose with some bready maltiness, but then you notice an underlying off character that just isn't right -- hell, it's diacetyl. And the diacetyl carries over -- rather heavily and consistently -- throughout the flavor. The buttery flavor overpowers all but a little spiciness from hops. There's no good bready malt character in this beer as there once was -- and I'm horribly disappointed.

To the bright side, and as mentioned previously, Lakefront's Big Easy Maibock is a terrific take on the style this year, and I know where to find more!

Summit Maibock is probably not available in to the O.P. in the state of New Jersey, but it's sterile filtered (unpasteurized), available in six-pack cans or 'heritage' style glass bottles, and is a decent, easy-drinking interpretation.

    It's fairly affordable at $7.99/six-pack, $12.99/12-pack.
