Hey guys, A friend of mine is in Maine and he enjoys sour beers. I recommended Allagash, but I am wondering if there are any other breweries places he should check out. Thanks!
I’ve enjoyed the farmhouse stuff I’ve had from Bissell Bros though they tend to be a little more funky, dry, Brett-forward than acidic. Otherwise, yes, Allagash and Oxbow are not only the best options in the city, but amongst the best options stateside.
Allagash and Oxbow are the correct answers. I’m hesitant to even add this (since they are an affront to everything I hold dear), but given the popularity of fruited kettle sours and “slushie” style beers, I will mention that Definitive and Barreled Souls are both highly regarded by those who enjoy them.
Went to Definitive for the first time a couple weeks ago. Totally different style than Allagash / Oxbow, but still tasty stuff. It's right across the street from Allagash, so I say it's worth a stop. If time is limited than priority Allagash and Oxbow, but Definitive is fun.
Mast Landing in Westbrook has a couple sours on draught right now and looks like a few different cans. It's about a 10 minute drive from Allagash and Industrial Way. Foundation has a couple, too.
Just realized my post could be read to be a diss on those breweries, which was not my intent. Definitive is top notch and BS is one of my absolute favorites. I just loathe fruit slushy juice beer.
Didn't read it as a diss at all. I think it was a good suggestion, since we don't really know what the OP's friend likes when they say they like "sour beer." If they are a purist and like wilds, barrel-aged beers, etc. then they probably don't like fruit slushies, but hard to tell. Since they used the term "sour" I'm guessing they like a bit of all styles.
