I can get Peeper, Zoe, and Mo for around $5.50 in the Orono area. In Bangor its a dollar more.

I would definitely not judge the quality of Maine Beer's other offerings based on Mean Old Tom. I had a glass at Atwood's awhile ago, and while I got some different taste--too much vanilla--and wasn't much of a fan of MOT, Peeper, Zoe and Lunch (haven't had Mo yet) are all fantastic in my book. If they cost less, I'd buy them more often, but they're still worth picking up once in awhile at their current price, I think. Certainly worth seeking out and trying once.

Just for the record (and not to suggest in anyway that bars are ripping you off), but typical markup on draft beer is 400-600%

The few Market Basket stores I've been in always seem to have a better than average beer selection compared to the other supermarket chains in the area. However I do wonder about their pricing sometimes because they are consistently cheaper than anywhere else and I don't know how they do it. I know I've seen beer there thats pretty damn close to, if not lower than, the wholesale price

agreed. i think maine beer co. is some of the best beer on the shelves for its style, but that doesn't mean i'd pay $100 for a bottle of zoe. this isn't because i'm too cheap (maybe i would pay $100 for some other beer), but because i can get comparable beers for way less.

maine beer co. isn't way overpriced or way "overhyped" IMO, but it is, in the end, overpriced. chalk it up to them being so small; hopefully with more success their prices will get more competitive. as is, i don't think the model is sustainable as more stuff hits the market. maybe i'm wrong though, who knows?

but yeah, it's not like i need zoe/lunch/peeper (and probably mo) to be $0.10/oz like SNPA or anything. but it's something like $0.40 ~ $0.50 /oz at the moment, AKA $30 6pk. like most beer, it doesn't stand high enough above the pack for that. give me $0.20/oz (AKA $14.40 6pk) at least...

The sad part of all the new stuff hitting the shelves in New England is the pricing. Jack's Abby is most likely to get my business with their pricing so far, but the others who are banking on $10 750's won't see too much of my fridge.

Maine Beer Co. is actually cheaper than some of the new stuff coming out in MA, that might help them out, but who knows.
