I’ve never lived close enough to Miller Brewing here in Milwaukee to smell it regularly. But I used to provide industrial services to the brewery. I got to know a brew master there. I told him how if I ever had three High Lifes I couldn’t sleep. He told me that’s because they were using corn syrup in the brewing process (long before AB started publicizing it in their ads). That’s how I figured out my sensitivity to fructose. And why I now actively avoid having more than one AAL. As for the brewery’s neighborhood smell, it was like Grape-Nuts to me.
Ha. My last night in Munich we went out to the club with some English kids and they also said they loved lahgah. I’ve been going since 2008. While the American styles have changed I don’t feel the proportion of UK to US beers has changed too much. I could be wrong though. Sounds like you went to the right pubs.
I didn't mean to suggest that the proportion of UK to US beers changed. I saw a lot of US beers last year. But US craft styles, like hazies, were present this year in a way that I don't remember them being last year. Perhaps this is all in my head, ha.
Fructose won't survive the fermentation process. It is efficiently turned into alcohol. Do you get a stronger reaction from sodas containing corn syrup? I doubt fructose could be a problem. Miller has also long used special chemically altered hop compounds to avoid the clear bottle beer being light-struck.
This is all correct. Even in "high fructose" corn syrup, fructose isn't the major sugar; dextrose (glucose) is. Fructose just makes up a larger percentage of the mix than it normally does. @liteon163 if you cannot consume honey or pretty much any fruit without suffering the effects you describe, then you have a fructose sensitivity.
I no longer eat fruit or drink fruit juice because it makes my heart race and exacerbates certain behavioral components of my ADHD. I also stopped drinking regular soda for the same reasons. In my younger days I thought it was caffeine sensitivity, but once I started drinking diet soda I realized it was fructose. One can of Coca-Cola could keep me awake for 12+ hours, but the same caffeine from a diet soda would last about six hours. Even fruit juice would keep me awake. So that’s enough evidence/experience to make me avoid fructose. This kind of sucks when I want a fruit beer.
I knew beer could make someone dumb, but I didn't know someone could make beer dumb. (Just a random thought brought on by the thread name)
Oh, this was the early 80s! I was a VISTA volunteer and then got a job in Golden with Jefferson County Open Space.
I don't know if I would like the brewery's smell, but I have been eating Grape-Nuts since my childhood. Love them and they will make you a regular guy, if you know what I mean.
I always thought the grain bed in Hawkeye's still looked like Grape-Nuts, so I attempted to ferment a batch back in high school to make gin. Spoiler alert -- no dice.
