I've seen a lot of tutorials on how to do this with burning string and ice water but I can't get it to work consistently. I'm testing on basic bombers before I use the 2 enjoy by bottles with my dads birthday. Sometimes nothing happens, sometimes the bottle breaks but has a lot of cracks in it, then once in a while I get a clean break. Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong or other recommendations.

I've never tried to make a glass from a bottle, but I've never seen a reference to this method in these threads. There is a device available in the marketplace that uses a glass cutter, and I don't think it's very expensive. I suggest doing a search on this topic in this forum and you'll find a couple of threads from the past 1-2 years that might be helpful, but I don't think these prior ones ever mentioned the method that you're trying.

Yea I figured I might have to go with a glass cutter. Guess I should stop being cheap and just pony up!

The little research I did also suggested a glass cutter. I don't think they ran any more than $15-20 for the amount you get it would be a great investment. You might want to sand down the edges after though but that should be easy.

I planned on the sanding too. Didn't want to end up looking like the joker.. Thanks for the input and the help!

Glass cutter works best. Then, boil some water and dip the bomber up to the line (Not past the line or you have a better chance of jagged edges) for a good amount of time. I usually will hold it in the boiling water for at least a minute. Turn your sink on cold and let the cold stream of water hit on the line where you cut. The cold temp and the pressure of the stream on the hot bottle will cause it to break perfectly. I've done a dozen perfect bottles this way.

Ahhhh, but how many are Stone Brewing? In 21 tries (believe me, I've seen all the YouTube vids that matter), I've got 3. Once separated, the rim gets a good 220, 320, 1000 sanding. Just finished an R&R Coconut IPA glass. Best one so far. I'll post a pic when on my PC later.

when the bottles break, you dont have jagged edges etc? it is perfectly smooth? or you have to sand it down?

The break ususally follows the score line but sometimes there is a dip or tab left behind. Read my post above the video.

I have the Kinkajou and have yet to get anything resembling a clean break.

Amen! For some reason, the Stone bottles are very, very difficult to separate without cracking. The Coconut IPA and the Enjoy by 8/2/13 IPA were the only two bottles I've been able to separate cleanly. I did however, drill a hole through the bottom of a 17th anniversary bottle to use for my beer-bottle garden fountain. Stone has so many great bottles, but my success rate is about 5% for salvageable glasses.

Do you hold the bottle and score it in your hand with the Kinkajou, or do you put it on a flat surface and rotate the bottle? I had better luck with the bottle on the counter.

Is it easy to drill a hole in the bottom? Any tips?

I have had success with the Kinkajou, after scoring them I place them in my freezer for about 15 minutes while I boil some water. Once the water is boiling I pour that slowly over the scoring then run cold water and it separates very cleanly. It is very important to use the bands that were provided otherwise you will not have a clean break.
