I use a round cooler with a braid. I used to have a rectangular cooler but it was very bulky and awkward, love the new round cooler. I also started to fly sparge and I usually get 75-80% efficiency, hit 87% on my last batch. The braid is fine but I feel like I get a lot of extra grain particles using it and may move to a manifold or false bottom.

One suggestion for a mash tun, I just learned is use high temperature food grade silicone hose any where you have high temperatures cause i had two batches of beer taste like vinyl hose because the hose degraded into the wort.

Yeah, this was one of the things that irritated me. The first cooler I ordered was a pre-built version from Midwest...on top of it being assembled incorrectly, the hose, connecting the false bottom to the bulkhead, was only rated to 140F...WTF?

I'm about to order from bargain fittings. It sounds like swapping the 2 piece valve from my boil kettle to the cooler and getting the 3 piece for my boil kettle is the best option right now. That way the heavy boiling and heating in the kettle can be cleaned easier using the 3 piece.

Now, I'm wondering what size hose I should use off the mash tun. Would quicker be better and go with a 1/2" or go with the same size 3/8" I use from my boil kettle to my counterflow chiller?

I use 1/2", but I don't think it particularly matters.
