I know we're all familiar with the American hop craze, doubled hopped ipas and even stouts seem to be the trend at least in American brewing, but a nice dark malty roasty Irish red or English nut brown just hits the spot. Or even a lighter buscuity pilsner or helles, and don't even get me started on the intricacies of a German hefeweizen but that's almost a category of its own.

Do you enjoy highly malty beers? Or would you rather just stick with the ipa and pastry stout trend that's been around for a while now. There's a place for those, but in Moy opinion we need more love for the big malt bombs out there

My favorites are skull splitter wee heavy, sam smiths nut brown ale, and moose drool brown ale for a nice every day drinker.

In the spirit of trying different things what are some of your favorite malt showcases you've had recently?

I enjoy a diversity of beer styles including malt forward beers.

A couple of months ago I purchased a four-pack of Lancaster Winter Warmer which is categorized as an Old Ale on BA. From the BA description: “Our classic Olde Ale delivers a complex malt flavor and blend of British and American hops.”

I also homebrew a number of malt forward beers.

The beer brand I homebrew the most (three batches a year) is my Oatmeal Stout. This is a rather ‘simple’ beer but I enjoy the dark malt flavors and the oatmeal provides a smooth mouthfeel.

I also homebrew what I term a Smoky Brown Ale which is essentially an English Brown Ale but instead of only using Pale Malt as the base malt I utilize some Weyermann Smoked Malt to the grain bill to add a bit of complexity to this beer.

Another beer I annually brew which has a malty aspect to it is a Czech Dark Lager. This beer is nicely balance between the dark malt flavors and the Czech Saaz hops but more on the malty side vs. hoppy. I just bottled a batch of this beer a few days ago.

    Cheers to malty beers!

Saw a pile of Bell's Best Brown at my local store recently. Picked up a 6 pack yesterday, love that beer and it's not just a clever name, it's one of the great browns.

Malt forward beers are what I tend to enjoy the most. So many greats to choose from. Celebrator Doppelbock, so far as I'm concerned, is one of the best malt-forward beers money can buy.

I enjoy a lot of malty beers myself. I have love for pastry stouts and hop bombs as well but there’s always a feel good malt forward beers in my refrigerator. Recently, I’ve had “Larry’s Last”. An oatmeal stout from Bells. I’ve found it to boast a very rich and complex malt bill. Delicious beer. Cheers.

Jesse, I too am a fan of Celebrator but at the high price of this beer ($15+ for a four-packs of small(er) bottle) at my local beer retailers) this is very much a once in a great while treat for me.

I did recently purchase a six-pack of Troegenator which I enjoy drinking and at 10 bucks a much better deal in comparison.

    Cheers!

the german "malt bombs" i enjoy are bocks or doppelbocks: UK are wee heavys, old ales, and barleywines; Belgians are some bigger trappists; and then only in small(er) doses. traditional malt-forward beers shouldn't be malt bombs.

I've had Troegenator and enjoy it. I know Celebrator is a bit more expensive, but I think it's worth it, especially considering the abv difference. Celebrator is 1.5% abv lower than Troegenator and I much prefer to have beers that are less boozy.

I love Me some malty beers. Even a good helles that showcases pilsner malts is something I would seek out over something like an Italian pilsner. It doesn't necessarily have to be roasty, chocolaty or even bready. But I like those too.

I am of this inclination as well. However, I've really been enjoying an abundance of this year's HB Winter Spezial and it's too smooth and delicious at 8%... I'm careful to savor only one at a time.

I'll take malty beers all day, no matter the style. I've had a decent amount of Baltic Porters recently that have been great, Jack's Abby German Style Porter and Tree House Cozy being highlights

And on occasion I do too; I bought myself a four-pack a couple of years ago as a Christmas present.

Celebrator is indeed a tasty beer!

    Cheers!

Could we argue that there are malt bombs, hop bombs, and YEAST bombs? Hefeweizen, tripel, saison, we are talking about yeast esters and phenols. Fermentation characteristics make things even more exciting I suppose. Now I'm rambling.

Right. Definitely putting Hefeweizen in a category of its own.

Of course there are so many ways to categorize beers but in the moment I was only really picturing that "hoppy to malty" slider you see on some brewery websites to help describe the flavor.

Obviously a hefeweizen is yeast forward, but that doesn't necessarily affect hops or malts in the recipe. It's just a nice showcase of wheat malts and German yeast.

I understand that came off as a strong generalization.
