Yes really, or at least for certain IPAs. Yes, those whose main flavor component comes from the hops will taste weak or stale, but plenty of more balanced IPAs that I've had, and DIPAs too even with stronger hop presence, showcase sweeter malt, richer and less citrusy fruit, and far less bitter flavors once the hops get out of the way. Once in a while, I even prefer those beers that way.

pretty much any double or ipa over 7% or so is going to have a pretty big malt base and profile.

Have to admit, I can't believe not one but TWO people suggested Jai Alai. I can only assume you've never had it fresh? I will admit Jai Alai changes with time possibly more than any beer I know, and after about 3 months might turn to the malty side. But inside of 2 months I don't even get a hint of malt.

Your drinking experience here is drastically different from mine.

    Cheers!

I can't remember the thread discussing recent batches of Jai Alai being unusually malty, but I personally had a 6er of it sent to me that was relatively fresh and I definitely noticed a good bit of malt. From what I understand though, CC has partially contracted out the brewing of that beer. Perhaps in order to increase their distro, idk.

Anyways, I look forward to trying it fresher from the actual source if I ever make it down to FL.

To the OP: seek out more traditional English style beers like ESBs or India Red Ales. They typically have a stronger malt presence than a lot of the newer American style IPAs.

Hate to see "malty IPA" fall in the category of leprosy.

These old benchmark IPAs like DFH 90, Hopslam for DIPAs and Celebration, DFH 60, Hop Devil are well made and although not the rage now, remain solid, relevant and worth every BAs attention along the way.

Agreed. Have had it as it came off the truck in Fla and find it a unique imbalance of bittering hop and malt.

In e-mail communications with Cigar City I was told that they do not contract brew the Jai Alai brand. Take that for what it is worth.
I was shipped a 6-pack from Cigar City that was only a few weeks (two weeks?) old. Those beers had a very notable malt backbone.

    Cheers!

If we're talking about a stronger malt backbone, can we just label this as English Style IPA's? I'm surprised no one mentioned this classic!

Foxy by Union in Baltimore is a well-balanced Red IPA, biscuity, malty and just a touch of Fall spice

I second this, but for different reasons. The more people buy this in other markets, the less they will potentially flood my bottle shops with it.

Along the lines of what others have said, but I'd look for DFH 90 minute, two hearted, left hand 400 pound monkey, and big sky ipa.
I definitely agree that I enjoy ipa's with a nice malt backbone to balance, although sometimes I want a massive, face slappingly bitter experience as well. Both ways are good in my book!

According to a Brewbound article- Cigar City and Perrin Brewing Company Collaborate on Michigan-brewed Jai Alai IPA, they did brew a batch of Jai Alai recently at their "partner" brewery (so, not exactly "contract brewing") Parrin in Michigan but as the article makes clear
    ... it was a one-off.

Having just tried it the other day, I've found another perfect recommendation for this, Deviant Dale's. Mine was only a week old, and it was still very balanced, bordering more so on the malty side, and tastes more of caramel malts than the citrus fruits that most IPAs mimic.
