so im looking for some red beers to try out that are more malt based than hops forward.(hops hurt my stomach) so far the only two ive had were rogues imp red (good but way too much hops) and killians (fine but i feel there is better put there)
mostpy looking for somethibg readily available on the east coast and something (preferably) that comes in a 4 or 6er. i have way too many bombers and they arnt the beat for nights of summer drinking.

Try to find some Anderson Valley Boont Amber. It's definitely on the maltier side of a red/amber ale. One of my absolute favorites. Distribution seems spotty to PA so I'm not sure about NY.

I'd seek out Ambers instead of reds.

    Bell's Amber
Odell's Levity (not sure of your location)
    Widmer's Drop Top

The Anderson Valley is a good rec too. I am not a fan but lots are.

Sam Adams Irish Red is good - along the same lines as Killians and way better.

North Coast Red Seal should do the trick, if you've never tried it before... caramel malts shine and hops take a backseat and seem non-existent.. it's a classic..

Fat Tire is one of my favorite Amber ales. big malty flavor and great mouthfeel. the can is even better than the bottle. I also love the IPAs so when I go for an amber it is a matter of choice, not necessity.

    Alaskan Amber.

It's actually an Alt. Great malty, drinkable beer.

I'd like to suggest an Italian Amber, Menabrea...excellent, little trace of hops.

Also try Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel, it's a mild smooth malty dark beer and it's delicious.

You might try switching to German dunkel weisses for a while too, they're probably milder than reds.

(BTW: Do you pour sediment into your glass then drink it? If you do stop, the cramps will go away in a day or two. Consuming the sediment in wheat beers is ok but if you're doing it with Belgian beers you have to stop it...sediment in Belgian beers is generally to be left in the bottle...it causes severe cramps.)

    Get well, KP.

my stomach issues have nothing to do with cramps. my stomach just doesnt like hops very much, it seems to just sit in my stomach and it tends to cause much more acid reflux than a malty porter or stout. I also am not the biggest fan of that overly hoppy taste anyway so it works out.

Im going to spring for some of that north coast red seal because im pretty sure ive seen it around before. If not ill look for sam adams red, ive wanted to try that for a while but have only seen it in a variety pack.

@yemenmocha: alaskan isnt available out in NY. but when my boss went to alaska he drank some and liked it a lot. he has an empty bottle of it sitting above his desk.

Lakefront Riverwest Stien beer. Its amazing for what you are looking for in a malty red. i know its not on the east coast, but it would be really easy to trade for.

To the OP - Zoe tastes like the exact opposite of a malty red to me. When fresh, its definitely hoppy to my taste buds. Just FYI.

I remember Sam Adams Brick Red being malty. Not sure if that's in bottles. I see it on tap every now and then.

I was expecting hops based on what the bottle says, but I live in seattle and I had to trade to get this beer. I think the bottles I had were older and the hop characters were totally gone. Wish I could try it fresh.
