Red Seal is good, as was the suggestion for Boont Amber. Not many people's favorite brewery on here, but you might want to try Breckenridge's Avalanche (an amber). And Fat Tire is an old faithful.

Yeah I figured based on your location you probably had an older bottle. It's a shame to hear someone traded you an old bottle of it!

yeah Ive had this many a time and its not what im looking for. Looking more for a red ale, not a lager, that i personally wouldnt consider a red or amber.

    G'Knight G'Knight G'Knight...

If I hear/read one more person claim that this is an IPA/IIPA I'll cry.

Some great suggestions on here. Definitely look for Alaskan Amber, Fat Tire, Sam Adams Irish Red, and Boont.

I also second the recommendation to seek out dunkel lagers, too. They're VERY malt forward since they're usually conservatively hopped, and the lager yeast doesn't impart a lot of additional flavors.

Odell's Red is a hop bomb. A good one too.

I've never had it so I won't argue but it is listed on this site (BA) as an Imperial IPA. With an IBU of 85, I would think that this one is not for the OP as he indicates he doesn't like hoppy bears and the BA review by the brothers indicates it is pretty hoppy. They gave it an "exceptional" rating so they did like it.

Do you get Breckenridge Avalanche in NY?
Coronados Mermaid Red was very malty
    Ballast Point Tounge Buckler.

    Cheers!

    Have you tried these?
    Mad River's Jamaican Red Ale
    Moylan's Danny's Irish Red Ale
    Elysian's Men's Room Red
Diamond Knot's Slane's Irish Red Ale
    Santa Fe's Irish Red Ale

Odell Red has 50 IBU's and G'Night has 85. If hops don't work for him, I'd avoid both of them like the plague. I'd probably shoot for beers with IBU's in the 20's and 30's.

I'd suggest Cape Cod Red if it had wider distribution. Worth a look if you're ever on vacation out on the far eastern tip of Massachusetts.

Yeah, I can comfortably drink things with IBUs up to about 50, and can handle up to 70ish after that its too bitter for my stomach and my tastes. even coffee stouts where bitterness is from the coffee and not the hops can be problematic.

thanks all for the suggestions. going to try the red seal and trying to seek out sam adams red.

Ill look out for the great lakes Irish too since i liek their beers. and when i say like, i mean even though they say they distro to NY i have only found them once. I bought the edmund fitz on the spot (though it was a year old) and enjoyed it immensely

If you think G'Knight isn't hoppy, I'm scared to think of what beers are.

SA Irish Red and Maine Beer Co.'s Zoe should be found in your area. Both, in my opinion, are excellent choices.

Has anyone said Short's Magician yet? If not, mark it down!

Edit: Sorry didn't realize you were looking for beers on the East Coast...definitely an easy obtainable trade request for some Michiganders tho.

tried red seal last night and something was off... I liked it but it wasnt all the way there. the only thing i can think of is if the bottle was a bit older (most likely it was). unfortunately i didnt see a best by or born on date on the bottle or packaging.
I also found out the kona coconut brown ale is way better on tap than out of the bottle. off the tap it seems not as much as a sweet coconut concentrate and much more balanced and toasted.

Alaskan Amber is one of my wife's favorite "go-to's."

Here is another one you might like - Bell's Amber Ale. Not as malty, to me, as Fat Tire and there is a hop presence but it isn't pronounced. The amber ale category has a lot of variety so very different beers fit into the category. I just looked at the distribution chart and saw that it isn't available in NY.
