Or maybe your palate is busted from all those exotic fruit beers:grimacing:

While we are on the subject, I also regret to inform the BA homebrew community that the first ever Exotic Fruit Beer Festival has been cancelled on account of lackluster community participation despite at least a dozen people claiming otherwise in the vote without the need for sexual favors. :slight_frown:

I fully believe @wspscott intends to make a Paw Paw Saison and no one else besides he and I are even remotely committed to making an exotic fruit beer. I'm somewhat jealous of @wspscott because the Paw Paw is practically impossible to obtain unless you live near KY and it's the quintessential indigenous exotic fruit of the USA.

I have settled on making a South American themed Guava Lulo Sour made with a Lactobacillus blend from Omega yeast.

This link is an ancient relic in internet time of the now defunct Exotic Fruit Beer Festival. :slight_frown:

Also, Mango as a potential fruit addition wouldn't have qualified for the defunct Exotic Fruit Beer Festival. It's far too pedestrian!

If you do a search for various all-Simcoe beers (e.g., Russian River Row 2, Hill 56 or Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA), mango is mentioned in a number of reviews.

I'm sure usage and palate are the biggest factors, but I buy most of my Simcoe from Freshops.

When do you recommend adding the fruit?

So I'll go with Citra hops, do you recommend using any real mango or mango puree in the beer? or will that just run into more complications than it's worth?

Also a huge thanks to all of you for replying. I was honestly expecting maybe one or two people to chime in. This is great, informative, and really appreciated.

Sorry to change course, how about adding grapefruit to a beer, not looking to make a shandy though.

Beer reviews are worth a dime per ten dozen to me, but some of them are worth a lot more when they come from a trusted source. Trusted sources are rare in terms of recreational beer reviews. I have no doubt many people tick the mango box when they taste a 100% Simcoe beer. Many people also tick the grapefruit box when hops that aren't known to produce grapefruit are used. Ooops!

In the end, the only thing that matters is how you perceive the sensory input. If you taste mango with Simcoe, I'm not saying you should taste something else. I'm just saying I taste something differently than you and I just don't get mango from Simcoe. Citra is another story. Mango bombs originate from Citra. It's the most tropical hop there is.

I have a Rakau Simcoe beer in the queue. I haven't used Rakau before, but it's supposed to have apricot notes that I suppose could easily be considered mango by some people. I will scrutinize that beer like every other beer I make with known ingredients. If mango happens, the results are inconclusive with respect to Simcoe.

Perhaps the two of you have different ideas about what Mango itself tastes like. If you google "what does mango taste like," the results are all over the map. (And some of them even include pine as a descriptor.) I did this when I was considering using mango in a beer, but hadn't tasted a lot of the real thing.

Not fair. You coincidentally made it before the defunct Exotic Fruit Beer Festival started. However, your beer did in fact qualify for the Exotic Fruit Beer Festival and I salute your willingness to experiment with the so called exotic fruits in beer. I was hooked on Jarritos Tamarindo soda for a few years and always wanted to use it in a beer. Someday it will happen. Your recipe will provide reasonable guidance with respect to how much Goya tamarind pulp to use. Thanks!

I buy mangoes about 3x per year and eat them fresh. They taste like mangoes.

I, personally, think mango tastes like peach with a hint of pine.

I add fruit to when I've reached a stable gravity. When I add fruit I usually use a secondary and add it then.
