Hey all, I see there was a thread on the Mangrove Jack dry yeasts about 18 months ago. I was curious if there were any new thoughts or reviews on how these work. Specifically I'm interested in the M03 Newcastle Dark Ale. I ordered a packet to use in an oatmeal stout. I've heard it's a bit of an under attenuator, which I'm fine with for the style, but I hope to get more feedback from people who've actually used it. Any thoughts?
The Newcastle Dark Ale is great. Definitely a low attenuator, but my experience with almost all of their yeasts (the belgian ale is the exception) is low attenuation, which seems to match the word on the street. Lots of dark fruity esters. I've used it in a few dark milds and a mole-spiced imperial porter, where it worked well. I could definitely see it doing well in an oatmeal stout.
Good to know. Thanks! I'm likely going to ferment in the mid- to high-60s, so that should help cut down just a tad on the esters. I want a relatively low attenuation rate, too. All in all I guess it wasn't a bad purchase, then.
