Hey guys, this might be a long shot but does anyone know any places near Manistique to watch some football this Saturday that will have some good beers on tap? I was also wondering what my best bets were to grab some Shorts to bring back home. Any chance the Spruce Pils is around? Thanks for the help. Cheers
As far as I know there's not much in Manistique. I've heard that the big grocery store (Jack's?) has a decent selection, though. If you're coming from Illinois, take a stop at Sav-Mor in Escanaba. Last I saw they had a few bottles of Spruce Pils sitting there.
They have a solid selection of Short's and other MI beers, so I don't think you'll be disappointed. From what I've seen they have the largest selection in the U.P.
Have you had Spruce Pils before? If not you may want to buy a single first. Spruce Pils has a very unique taste
I havent. but it sounds like something that i would enjoy quite a bit. maybe ill grab a single or 2 and try them over the weekend. and get more on the way home if i like it. thanks for the heads up tho. ive enjoyed most all of shorts beers ive had in the past. and ive tried prob 20+ by them. cheers
I was trying to be polite. I love Short's, love their experimentation, but dang is that one Piney beer. Not notes of pine, but straight up gnawing on an evergreen branch piney. Let me know what you think though, some people do like it.
No No, I def didnt take it any bad way. i do appreciate the opinion. if i can find some ill post my thoughts. i think it sounds pretty interesting. they have to rank up there as most experimental brewers.
I like your "gnawing" analogy. I think this beer has been piney to the point that it tasted to me like Pine-Sol smells like, and also to some others who made descriptive comments last year and used that janitorial soap product to describe the pine. To Short's credit, I suspect that they reacted to those comments and changed the recipe for this year because I never heard one peep about the Pine-Sol taste this year. I think every comment about this beer has been favorable in these threads. I didn't get any of this beer so far this year because I've been waiting to see if more comments using this descriptor came up. I saw some SP in my local bottle shop last week, so maybe I'll get some now and see for myself.
Good point, I have not had any since the Imperial Series release in 07. Still that experience was enough for me. Let me know what you think.
I didn't have the Imperial Series beer when it was fresh (and haven't had the 12oz bottles either), but I have some friends who did. Then we all tried one that had a few years of age on it and all agreed it was great.
this is all getting me excited to find some haha. i def think ill just grab a couple 12oz to try it first tho. thanks again guys. now if i can just find a bar to watch the Mich game up there ill be all set! i might have to slingbox it.
Finding a bar with Sportsballâ„¢ on the television in the Yoop is probably going to be the easiest part of you trip. Now a bar with a decent beer selection (Non-BMC) in the Manistique area, that might be a little trickier. The Big Spring Inn is probably your best bet. I hear they have some craft bottles and some U.P. Craft on tap. (KBC (Houghton) and Ore Dock (Marquette)). Also do yourself a favor and pick up a sixer or two of Blackrocks brewery's 51k IPA cans. It is delicious. I am heading back home to Escanaba in a week or so and I'm already looking forward to that beer.
51k is a great beer. ive also been to oredock while in marquette. thanks for the suggestions. I will look up the big spring inn. is Sportsball like ESPN for the UP?
haha, can only imagine the sports that would be on a channel like that! i saw those bicycles with the fat snow tires on them last feb when i went to marquette. pretty awesome.
I got the last one! Thanks for the tip. I actually really enjoyed this beer. so did the guy i split it with. the spruce, while there was definitely not completely overpowering to me. i will be looking for more next year. back at work today...all i can think about is the U.P. lol. cheers guys
