Hey guys. So I had a concern about MBCP which I traded for. I've traded for this beer two times. The first was about 2 or 3 months ago, which I enjoyed about 2 weeks after receiving. It was just what I was expecting and more! Really delicious with lots of sweet maple syrup flavor and a subdued bacon saltiness...I Drank this with the lady and she really like it so I decided we needed another. The second one I traded for arrived about a month ago. That one I drank yesterday...and it was really, really disappointing. I could not pick up any maple or coffee and it had a really off taste...tasted like chocolate milk. I could Only pick up Maple on the nose right after opening it....otherwise, just chocolate milk and smokiness. On both occasions, I shared this beer with my girlfriend and she agreed that the beer was completely off. My first thought was maybe it had fallen off...but it seemed so weird that there could be such a rapid shift in taste between only a month or so. My second concern was that maybe I was sent a MBCP from last year's release....but I looked it up and the bottles seem to be different (no neck label on 2014 bottles). My next thought is that maybe this bottle had not been stored in optimal conditions...my best bet is an adjunct like maple syrup would hold up longer if the beer had been refrigerated as opposed to cellared. I refrigerate all my beers so they were treated equally while in my possession.

Before posting this, I checked the reviews on MBCP to see if any one had the same thing happen and, as I suspected, someone in August reported smokiness and NO maple flavors (if you have had a good bottle of MBCP you would find this statement absurd). So now I am wondering if there is a problem with quality control? I do not suspect an infection because it did not explode on me or taste infected.

Forgive the long-winded post but I wanted to ask your opinions. Have you guys opened up a MBCP recently and experienced anything similar? Do you think it is a matter of the conditions the bottles were stored since it's release in January or quality control?

It is most likely an improper storage issue. I've opened 5 bottles between Jan '15 to Sept '15. Not a single issue with any of them. All were stored in a refrigerator or wine fridge - either mine or other local guys I share beers with regularly.

Was the '14 release the same label? - someone who had both can confirm. I thought the labels were new for '15 (with Last Snow following the exact same format.)

I haven't had any bottles of this in a few months so I can't confirm how it's currently tasting, but there isn't much a brewer can do to stop adjuncts from falling off, and if you've had another bottle from the same batch and that was delicious, it is clearly not a brewery quality control issue and likely poor storage.

EDIT: For the record, I do not work for FB, just a fan.

Storage issue for sure. I've heard from countless people recently that it's still drinking great.

I've had it once. Smoke and coffee. Barely any maple at all. Disappointing taste for sure.

I don't know if I can trust you not working for them  Haha.

I was in no way trying to blame the brewers though...I love me some Funky Buddha. But based on feedback received so far it seems it is an issue of storage. Seems maple is an adjunct that should be refrigerated to preserve taste. However now it becomes the issue of whether you should ask a potential trader how a bottle was stored. But I, in no way, blame the person I traded with for it...I am just gonna chalk this one up to a loss and be grateful I have a bottle of Morning Wood left.

    Cheers!

I've had this year's a couple times (most recently, 2 weeks ago) and it has tasted great each time! Definitely a storage issue... now if you wanna send me that Morning Wood, I'll let you know if it's off, no thanks needed

I'm going to echo what others have said and say it was probably a storage issue. Another possibility is shipping, which somewhat correlates with storage in regards to temperature etc. I'm a believer that shipping beers across the country (particularly multiple times) is not good for them. I'd generally prefer my trade partner to be the original purchaser of a beer and location can (but not always) be the best indication. If I'm trading for Jackie O's BBBM and the trade is with somebody in San Diego I can't help but wonder how many times the beer has already crossed the country, not to mention why they are trading a beer they traded for in the first place

2014 bottles have a completely rectangular label. 2015 bottles have the angular design label.

Thanks for the insight, dude. Supports the idea that the reason a few of us experienced this problem was because the bottles were most likely not stored at optimal conditions.

Edit: In fact, it seems like the three of us who had problems were all out of state.

FWIW: the last one I had a few weeks ago was nothing like the first 3 or 4 I've had since release in Jan. Flavors fade, bottle variation is a possibility, but they were all cold stored in a fridge. I wouldn't assume it was your trading partners fault is what I'm saying, though it could have been.

When people say "storage issue" on a beer that's 3 or 4 months old massively impacting the beer over the span of one additional month ... I gotta say, really? Where do you think people are storing the beer? In a furnace? Underneath a palm tree at the beach? It's a conclusion that's impossible to prove or refute ... but doesn't really seem likely.

He's talking about a beer right around release versus 3 - 4 months old. This is not an old beer.

Stored in a reasonable environment (cool / dark place with stable temp) for 3 - 4 months storage should be a problem. We're not talking about faberge eggs; beer isn't / shouldn't be that fragile.

Mbcp was released on January 10th so it would be a 9 month old beer, not 3-4 months old.

and a beer like this will be very different right now if it was stored 9+ months in a refrigerator versus in a closet at room temp (73-80+ degrees depending on the room.)

If I was not being clear in my previous posts, this is exactly what I meant. I strongly believe you will have a different beer if you store it for 9 months in a fridge as opposed to 9 months out in room temp or warmer, especially one with adjuncts.

Mea culpa, I assume he got one after release, not already 7 months old.

I probably jumped to conclusions because I tend to find beer pretty durable. Most of my stuff is stored at 68 in the dark and I've had adjunct beers a year+ old that were still popping.

Not knocking FB beers - I love MBCP - but they do seem to fade / fall off much more sharply than a lot of other stuff. I don't know why. Something like MBCP I wouldn't even trade for after 2-3 months. Same for Snowed In, Last Snow, etc. Not sure why - would love to hear theories - but they have really bad longevity in my experience.

    Cheers.

You aren't going to see the same changes in a beer that is stored in a fridge as you would in a beer that is stored in a cellar. Maybe MBCP has adjuncts that fall off when stored in a cellar vs a fridge but I wouldn't say that they are storing the beer improperly. That being said most people in Florida do not have basements and most likely don't have cool dry areas of their houses where you can properly cellar beer so unless they have bought or built some sort of cellar or are storing it in their fridge it is most likely being stored above 70.

It fades quickly as well. Most of FB stuff does this. It even says "drink fresh" on the bottle. I'd recommend drinking any of their bottled beer within 6 months max.
