I see that almost none of the local businesses post their events here on BA (as there is just one event posted for all of MN for the month of March). I just moved to the area and it is going to take me a bit to get all their schedules, get on their email lists, etc. But in the meantime, I was wondering if there are any cool events happening in the immediate area through the rest of the month. Breweries, beer bars, brewpubs, etc.

And I have been here visiting many times before, and while I appreciate any efforts, I actually don't need a scrolling list of bars, breweries, bottle shops, etc. to visit. I actually have made the rounds quite a bit over the years. I am just trying to find out about some upcoming events, as I am too crammed for time with the move to go through 40 different websites, half of which rarely get updated, trying to see what is coming up.

Also, why is there so little contribution from the beer establishments in MN, to this site? Is Beer Advocate relatively unknown to these businesses in MN?

It used to be that local Beer Advocate users "took up the slack" in that respect*, but with some exceptions that is no longer the case.

There are a few local homebrewing and other special interest groups that do a great job of this sort of thing (including Facebook, Meetup, and Yahoogroups), but using Twitter seems to be the best way to keep up to date. MNBeer has always been a great way -aside from Twitter- to keep up with all the events, but there are more events than ever nowadays! So you basically have to sign up with and monitor all of those emails. Failing that, there is a fairly active core group of local Beer Advocate users, here. You might want to consider the Minnesota Beer Activists' page for links to upcoming events. Good Luck!

*See also: establishment reviews, adding new breweries, etc.

Firkin Fest is March 30th. Always a great time, tickets should still be left too.

Thanks, I can see that mnbeer is definitely ging to help out a lot. I guess that coming from CA, where businesses are very active on sites like this, their own sites, social networks, etc., that I am amazed at how little of that seems to be going on with these businesses here. For instance, Muddy Pig has always been one of my favorite stops when visiting, but I just went and their site has one of those "under construction" images that looks like it has probably been there for months or years and I went to their twitter and the last activity on that account was three months ago. Then I happened to be at the Gold Nugget in Minnetonka the other night and saw that they had a cool sounding beer dinner coming up, but I didn't note the date and now I don't even remember the brewery and it isn't even listed in their calendar on their own site. I guess that it is good that there are these thrid party sites like mnbeer helping to get at least some of this stuff out there for people to know about.

Thanks! Actually, that one I probably would have found out about later today, as I am planning a brief happy hour stop at HG.

Seems like the interweb gods are plotting against me again. Now that I figured that mnbeer was a good source, I finally had a chance to sit down and check it out; now that site is a complete mess and is unreadable.

Ouch, something happened to the site and the format is all screwy, and not like it usually is. Give Ryan a chance to get it fixed before you pass final judgment.

A few bars will post on here, myself, Al from the Nile and Ben from Butcher and The Boar, to name a few. However, it's a bit frowned upon by the mods, because I guess you are not supposed to "pimp" your events on a thread, just on the events calendar, which is fine but it takes a while and cuts down on interaction. There is a Facebook page called "Beer People" It's a bunch of twin cities and beyond beer folks, from home brewers to people in the business, that's a good one too. Also, an easy way to see a bunch of events on your twitter without having to follow everyone and their mother is to follow the major distributors in your area (JJ Taylor, Capitol, Hohensteins, etc...) they will typically post all their events, that way you don't have to follow a hundred breweries and restaurants... unless of course you want to!

Oh! and PS I should probably mention that I'm having an event tonight (Tuesday the 12th at 5) With Big Sky's Cowboy Coffee Porter and Sausage. I'm not allowed to tell you what it's called because apparently it's controversial, but the posters in the restaurant are amazing!

Adding the distributors sounds like a great idea. The one thing that I hate about having to follow stuff like this on social media like Facebook or Twitter is that I just don't have the time to filter through the floods of nonsense that usually comes with all of that to get to the 1% of content that I care about. In California, the events calendar was always used very effectively on this site by all the breweries, beer bars, etc. Although, after the whole BA site crash and the mess that became, I can't say for sure that any of those establishments came back to the same level. BTW, I am going to be up in St. Louis Park late this afternoon, so I think that I will try and check out this event. I am always down for a good coffee beer.

Not passing final judgement. I actually saw a glimpse of it when the site was running fine and bookmarked it. It just seemed inevitable that this would be yet another road block. Also, after this happened last night, I decided to check out the websites of at least 60% of the beer bars, breweries, etc. around the Twin Cities that I know are popular places and while almost all of the sites had events sections, calendars, blogs, news, etc.; almost none of them were up to date. The only site that I saw that seemed like anybody was actually updating it, was Nomad's.

But you can probably also see that the site is fairly screwed up, as well. But I saw this as well last night, but the additional issue was that none of the events actually linked. All the links were broke. So when I clicked on the "Big Sky Breakfast...," I got an error, so just seeing that didn't tell me much. But if the links have been fixed, then I suspect the site is being worked on, so I am not sweating it too much now. I'll probably check mnbeers again in another week or so.

Thanks for the head's up on the formatting on MNBeer.com - true to form, I try something new and I break something in the process. I think it's fixed, but I may have to give up on a plug-in that was supposed to help speed up the site.
