Ohhh maaaan, bummer! What an iconic brewery. Great beer and vibe. Great place to stop in for a beer after a beautiful hike in Marin. Damn COVID...

Damn. Marin, Moylan's, Mendocino, Bear Republic, and Lagunitas bombers were the stuff I cut my teeth on. I never made it to their taproom and haven't seen their beer in ages but I'll always pretend I can remember which beers were Mendocino brewing and which were Marin!

Wow... Cellarmaker's story began at Marin Brewing. That's sad for sure.

This is me as well, except I did make it to the brewpub on several occasions. I was living in Sacto when Marin brewing first opened up. The dipsea run barleywine was my idea of the gold standard when it came to great barleywines. I loved the location and the brewpub facility was great. Food was always quite good and I can't recall ever having a bad beer there.

This is very painful news to hear.

    Definitely a bummer!
Super belated shout out to a recommendation on here ~10 years ago to take the ferry from SF to Larkspur to enjoy a beverage. Was a fun/scenic boat ride and great spot as a destination.

I also 'cut my teeth' on alot of various Marin/Moylans beers from 2003ish-2010. I'm not sure I've seen anything from them since I moved to SD county in 2012. White Knuckle and Hopsickle were awesome in fresh bombers from spot I used to frequent in Pasadena.

I have a feeling a bunch more may go under after the big beer boom we’ve had.

Since they were connected to the Tied House (on of the first micro breweries in the Bay Area), this one hit me hard. I loved hitting Gordan Biersch in Palo Alto and Tied House in Mountain View in the late 80s and 90s. Sad to see the first era of craft beer go away.

I never had any Marin Brewing Beers and barely knew they existed. However, they sound a lot like the Tied House and other breweries that started back then.

I have two fond memories or Marin beers from when I lived on the east coast
    • The first batch of White Knuckle, which was just an astounding DIPA
    • Stopping by the brewery after a day at Muir Woods, Mt. Tam and Stinson Beach. It was a great end to a great day
It's been a good decade since I've had their beers, but I still look back fondly on my experiences with them.

It was a bit more upscale than either the Tied House or the original Gordon Biersch. A bit larger than either of those places as well. However, I agree with you otherwise... There seemed to something of a brewpub "model" back then in NorCal (late 80's and early 90's), and they definitely seemed to fit into that mold. Devil Mountain, Willets, Stoddard's, Lighthouse in Santa Cruz, Rubicon, Pacific Coast... They all had a pretty similar vibe I thought

Moylan’s will remain open as Brendan owns the land and building.

I haven't been downtown Palo Alto for some time. I looked at the situation on Google Maps on Emerson Street and see that Gordon Biesrch is now Tacolicious and the cool craft beer pub that was across the street is now a Buca di Beppo. Oh, well...

This one hits home. It's one of the first breweries I visited when I moved to California and always loved going there. Since graduation, that hasn't happened sadly. I learned how to play darts there.

There has been a Buca di Beppo on Emerson Street in Palo Alto for a long time. There was a pub/restaurant a couple doors down, can’t remember the name, but I wouldn’t have thought of it as a cool craft beer pub. Maybe where the Pizzeria Delfina is now (per google maps)?

But the beer at Marin and Moylans was a big cut above any of those places, IMO of course.

OK, after doing some research it was called the Empire Tap Room on Emerson. It was a classy looking place with a long bar and some patio seating out back. It had something like 20 taps with a combination of American craft and quality imports. This was back in the early 1990s.

Yup, that’s the one. Was still there in the late 90s early 00s. I thought it was pretentious and uninspired, but YMMV.
