Found out this morning on Facebook through Byrd's Beer at The Pig page.

Such a shame, because MC Pig was the shit. Best beer place I found while I was there. Granted, it's been a few years since I was in Myrtle, but still, Mike is a good guy, and his store doesn't deserve the short notice. They literally just got their growler station remodel done.

Hopefully, the company is helping the people affected find jobs, and hopefully Mike can find a new place to make as good as MC Pig was.

RIP MC Pig. Gonna miss you.

I mean, is there anywhere else close that's even half the selection as the Pig? I never found any...

This sucks. Easily the best beer stop between Wilmington and Charleston on the coast.

We can only hope Byrd considers opening a bottle shop/taproom type thing. No other place compares to the pig around here. No way I can live off greens.....

I talked to Byrd yesterday and he told me the news, I believe he was and probably is in shock about the whole thing. I too hope he can open a bottle shop up on his own or with investors, he's a good guy who doesn't deserve this.

Dang, I haven't been down to MB since I found out about the place from these boards. I guess I'll never go now.

What are the reasons for the closure? Is Piggly Wiggly completely going down the drain, or was the store "under-performing"?

It sounds as though the 'Market Common' owners wanted too much money on the lease. Here is a FB response from Mike...Byrd's Beer at The Pig The people who own TMC now refused to renegotiate a lease that we could afford. It had nothing to do with competition or the fact that were not doing well. So, you are correct..... it came down to the money. No other chain is interested either, so it will be a shell of once was for who knows how long......

Yeah, that's not surprising, the whole lease thing.

I'd gladly put money into a shop if I had it.

If it's the same company that ran the Charleston pigs, then yes. They Enroned the fuck out of things.

The Market Common Piggly Wiggly was mentioned in one of the articles as being the last company-operated Piggly Wiggly in SC. Doesn't sound like its the same company running the Charleston ones, unless those were also directly run by Piggly Wiggly.

That is a real bummer, we hit the Piggly Wiggly Market Common every year when we came down for my wife's company beach trip - both for groceries and beer. Always a friendly/helpful staff and great selection.

Hope the employees and Mike are able to find other opportunities quickly.

Sad, but I'll just load up at Seminar and Micky Finn's One Stop on my way to or from The Beach.

Pavilion Beverage in North Myrtle is doing a decent job on domestic craft beer. A couple of gems on the shelf right now

Last time I went, no one mentioned that place, so I did not have any idea of it, which means I have no opinion of the place. But I guess that gives me an option until Mike gets a new place opened (which is what he's trying to do, according to his post on FB).

The Pig is officially history.:slight_frown: I went by there Friday just to see if anything was left, the were boxing up the few remaining bottles on the shelves. I talked to Mike briefly and he told me he was going to meet with a possible investor this week from Charleston. He'd like to do it on his own and has a gofundme link set up on his Facebook page if anyone wants to contribute.

I'm in Myrtle Beach this weekend and ran across this page as I found out the MC Piggly Wiggly had closed.

I thought I would post here that Mike and the great beer selection moved to the Piggly Wiggly in Surfside Beach (only about 10 minutes away from Market Commons.)
