Marketing Advice for Brewers

    If you're going to sell stouts for twice the price of the best one on this side of the Atlantic, you probably shouldn't be an asshole to your customers. I had a great experience this morning at a brewery talking to one of the best brewers on the planet. He was generous with his time and passionate and genuine in speaking about his beer. A few hours later I ordered a beer from another brewer at a festival who was the complete opposite. I asked two questions of the guy while there was nobody else waiting for a beer and he couldn't have been more of an anus. Are people entitled to be grumpy? Sure, but that's not the face you should put on when peddling your shit to the masses. So nope, not spending 5+ euro for the guy's beers anymore when I can get one just as good for half the price.

    If you say A then you can say B. Names! I'm gonna guess. Beavertown is brewer n1 and De Molen is brewer n2?

    Incorrect on n1! It was Armand during an early visit to 3F before the festival. Although the Beaverton folks were very pleasant.

    I heard this from a couple of guys. I cannot say it for myself because I did not visit with De Molen in person. They were always very nice to me when I spoke to them. Also my friends did not agree with you, but maybe they just had a bad day.

    Have never had the pleasure of speaking to anyone from De Molen in person but I did corresponded with them via email on some quality control issues I had with one of their stouts. The beer in question was a collaboration with a US brewer and it was not cheap. Bottle was completely uncarbonated. De Molen tried to tell me that the beer was supposed to be lightly carbonated but as we all know there is a big difference between light carbonation and no carbonation!

    I spoke to one Dutch user on here and he told me this has been a constant issue with some of their beers and he had similar responses. To be fair to them they did promise me a free drink should I ever visit the brewery. I will have the printed email and we'll see if they make good on that!

    Yes, like I said everyone has a right to be moody and I could have just caught them at a bad time. However, I've recently become reluctant to spend big money on small bottles. This experience kind of seals the deal that I won't be doing it much in the future. Luckilly, for every bad beer experience I've had there have been a million good ones.

    I have mixed feelings on this topic.

    I have seen brewers that have no people skills whatsoever at festivals, a very poor choice indeed. Breweries should keep these people away from the drinking public. The smarter brewers understand this and avoid these interactions.

    Now the exact opposite is also true, bring a passionate, friendly brewer to a public event and it does nothing but bolster that brand.

    Everyone has a bad day, so we all should not be too harsh, but a pattern of this behavior usually emerges.

    Totally agree with this. When I have the opportunity to meet the brewers I like it only furthers my respect for them when are pleasant and take time to talk with their customers. Of course we all have a bad day but people dealing with the public like this should be able to leave it outside the door! It costs nothing to be nice but as per the OP, it might cost allot more being unpleasant.
