Hey all, Im looking to start an IPA this weekend and im a bit nervous about my mash tun size. Im trying to make a 5 gallon batch and my mash ton is made of a 5 gallon igloo cooler. Ive been researching and re read how to brew and came with a 1.5-2.0 L- 1 LB water ratio is recommended. With that ratio im stuck to no more than 10 or 11 Lbs of grain.. Im wondering if anyone has any ideas for me.. I planned on batch sparging but could fly sparge if thats my only option

You can mash thicker than 1.5 Liters per Pound. I assume by "L" you mean Liters (metric), but I'm puzzled because you also said LB (american).

I recently brewed a barleywine that I mashed at 1.25 qt/lb thickness with no issues other than needing to stir everything a bit longer to break up dough balls. I typically mash around 1.4-1.75 qt/lb though depending on what gives me a convenient amount of water to measure out.

You can make it happen. Just mash thicker, beware of dough balls and get a good run through on your sparge.

Or brew a smaller batch size.
    Nothing sacrosanct about 5Gs.
