Hey ladies and gents! I'm gonna be staying on the northern part of Maui for about 10 days for my honeymoon in about a month. Are there any places with good beer around there? Pubs or breweries? Also, anything good that would hit distro there that doesn't in the Midwest?
On the North side Rock N Brews in Paia has the best selection on tap. Whole Foods and Tamuras Fine Wine have the best bottle selection. Besides going to Maui Brewing in Kihei I'd also go to Monkeypod Kitchen for their happy hour. It's also in Kihei and has a very solid tap list and great food / prices. We get a ton of California beers so I'm sure you'll stumble on some beers you can't get in Minnesota. Cheers and enjoy the trip!
I visited Kohola Brewery in Lahaina last October. The beers weren't mind blowing but they were good and worth checking out.
True that. The Kihei has a little more selection but no food. Food truck only. But most Maui beers are better than most island brewery's. I prefer Big Island Brewhaus over Maui. But BIB is hard to find on the other islands.
it's overpriced but Merriman's is a great place to have a happy hour drink and watch the sunset. worth it just for that. and they actually have a decent beer list. in the area you're staying also, I should mention, when visiting the islands it is customary to bring @ShoyuStout beers. unless you want your vacation to be like the 2-part episode of Brady Bunch where it was cursed
When I went to Merriman's last year they had a bottle of Saison Rue listed but at $40! I think overpriced is an understatement. The sunset was phenomenal though.
If you are staying up north, Paia Pit Stop has a good selection of singles if you want to sample a bunch. If you don't get them in MN, Logsdon Farmhouse Ales and Breakside Brewery from Oregon are worth a try imo. Tourist shizz to note: As of a 3 months ago sunrise viewing at Haleakala is by advance reservation only so book online or face major disappointment at the summit. Also educate yourself on rat lung worm disease. There's been an spike of outbreaks on the wetter parts of Maui and the Big Island. So no grinding da guavas and mangos you find on da ground. http://bit.ly/2rVXpL1
Heading to Maui next week, anything new I should check out? Already planning to go to Kohola and the Maui brewpub. We're staying in Kaanapali. Also, do breweries on Maui fill other growlers? When we were last there ~2 years ago that was the case, but figured I'd check before we lug our Bruery Reserve Society growler (which gets almost no use in Boston!) Thank you!
You can't put that Bruery Reserve Society growler to use at Trillium? https://beerinhawaii.com/ I haven't visited OGG in 3 years. Used to be our go to island. But it's been ITO or KOA the last 7 visits. Maybe @ShoyuStout or @Black_Rider can update you.
Thank you! Sadly no, our rules were just updated very recently to allow for non-branded glassware to be filled, but to my knowledge no one in MA is filling swing-tops yet. Not a huge deal since Trillium is canning everything these days, so I just opt for those instead. Last time we were in Hawaii we really wanted to get some beer to go at Kauai Beer Company but didn't want to spring for a ~$30 growler we couldn't use back home.
We visited KBC back in Jan 2014. I brought with me several bottles from CA and SoCal to share with the guys at KBC. I brought back home with me their Black Limousine. I brought my SS growler to Kauai just in case.
Well you're a fucking life saver, thank you. I'm planning for a trip in April of next year and I've gone to Haleakala a couple of times before so assumed no need to really look into anything regarding driving up the mountain. I'd happily bring you a beer or two from Texas, will touch base soon.
Heading to Maui in a few weeks for our honeymoon and this was a great thread to stumble onto! Quick question - anyone know of a framers place to watch a college football game? We are staying at the Andaz in Wailea so preferably something close by but we will have a car. Thanks for the help!
Thank you! Monkeypod looked like the best option but wasn't sure if there were any others I should be looking out for.
