The big island had a thread, but didn't really see anything on Maui. Spending a few days out there this week and tomorrow night need to ditch out of the hotel with a buddy since the girls are all getting ready for a wedding. Any good beer bar-ish spots in the Kaanapoli area? Seems like just a whole lot of resorts. Any must hits while on the island?
I would say hit one of the Maui Brewing Sites (normally go to the locations on Oahu). They have good food and decent beer selection (usually just the normal selection, not too many specialty beers anymore). I will most likely be on Maui in June for my wife's high school reunion. We may hit Mahalo Aleworks in Makawao.
Maui Brewing in Kihei. Nice vibe. Good food. Bit pricey. Reminds me of Stone. But a must go to spot on Maui.
You're pretty far out there in resort land and after the fire there is not much there. MBC just closed their tasting room out that way I believe. MBC in kihei was mentioned but a long way from you, Stone vibes is dead on.If down that way can go to Kohola tasting room, Kona brewing their beers for now since they lost their brewery in the fire. Can go up to Mahalo in makawao which is a cool little town up country, good food truck court around the corner. Up that way Ocean vodka is great and a great view. Maui wine up country too and fun to go and great burger across the street. Overall Maui is a beer wasteland. Have fun. Be Pono. Cheers.
That was the tasting room in Kahana, they actually have a location on Kaanapali Beach right before the Sheraton now, its pretty cool. Also the Mokeypond in Whalers Village has some good beer options and best Mai Tai on the island.
I cannot recommend Mahalo Brewing enough. For me, it’s the best beer in Maui. The my have a smash burger joint attach to them, sunset views were great and live music was awesome.
Also, the new Kohala Brewing location in Kihei/Wailea is awesome , but thats not close to where you asked about. But id still highly suggest going.
Agreed and 100% worth the drive from Kaanapali. Oh and if you don’t get a Mai Tai from Monkeypod, you doing Maui wrong
Last few MP mai tais I have had were just ok, not sure if they have changed quality of the rum but seemed not as good. Best mai tai on Maui is at Esters Fair Prospect.
Thanks everyone for your recs. Hit MonkeyPod for lunch before the wedding. Solid food, the Mai Tai was nice, and good tap list. @PatKorn completely right there isn't much up by where we were staying haha. Safeway had a decent selection of locals, and grabbed some Kohola brewing and another one there. Made it to MBC in Kehei before the airport and dug the patio there. Agree, that it was overpriced, but I feel like everything on the island was haha. Overall, was a blast and bummed I'm posting this from work this morning instead of from my hotel.
^^^ Maui Brewing Ka’anapali. Hard to beat the aesthetics of this location. Black Rock in distance. They took over the space from Huihui restaurant last year. The Huihui website is still up and there’s a groovy virtual tour there. https://huihuirestaurant.com/virtual-tour Very cool space. IMO, skip Monkeypod. They still “proudly” serve their beer at 29° in a frosty glass no less. Annoying. That’s right, lagers AND ales, served at 29°. Takes a few minutes to taste anything. If you find yourself in Whaler’s Village, walk right by Monkeypod and go to the ocean trail. Turn right and Maui Brewing is less than a 5 minute walk. Had the best iteration of Pueo Pale Ale & Big Swell ever. Fresh!
When you went to Kihei, did you go the restaurant and/or tap room? Did they have any of their specialty beers beyond the Imperial Coconut Porter? Their specialty beers have pretty much disappeared at their Oahu Kailua location over the past couple of years.
Tamuras in wailuku or kihei, think the lahiana one is still closed. they have great poke too. foodlands always have a good selection and good prices for hawaii. whole foods in hawaii is super expensive. huli pau.
second Tamuras … plus they have inexpensive and totally sick hats and t-shirts … like Maui Built, a must buy!
Well, I'm off to Maui next week for my wife's high school reunion. We will be staying in Kihei about seven minutes from Maui Brewing - Kihei. It's on the list.
If you get a chance head up to Mahalo in Makawao, cool little spot making good beers in a cool little upcountry town. Also Marlow up there, best italian on Maui.
Thanks for the recommendation! My wife's cousin lives in Makawao. Love the city/area and was hoping that we can swing up to visit and include Mahalo.
Back from Maui. We had an amazing time at my wives high school reunion (stayed in Kihei). One day we went up country to Skyline Zipline on Haleakala to pick seeds and plant local plants (replace invasive trees such as eucalyptus trees which were planted by sugar can farmers). On our way back down, we stopped at Mahalo Aleworks (thanks @PatKorn for the recommendation!), Mahalo Aleworks is a must stop. Great service, good selection of tasty beers, and an amazing view of Maui from the second story. Don't come here looking for high ABV or BA beers. Just good beer with locally sourced products (mango for sours and macnuts for the stout). It was good to stop because we went to Lahaina to check out the recovery and visit a church which survived (some of wives classmates lost homes from the fire). Next day, the group went to Maui Winery (one of only two wineries in the islands). I was the designated driver, but we had a great time visiting and enjoying the views. Once we got back to Kihei, I went over to Maui Brewing - Kihei to get some crowlers for the happy hour before the luau. Located in a nice industrial area of Kihei, it's a big brewery with a lot of selection. I was happy to see some beers which aren't standard (even though I couldn't order them for the crowlers). A nice gentleman let me try his BA Stout which was yummy (forget the name). I way happy to order 16oz crowlers of their Waimea Red, Lahaina Brown, Imperial Coconut Porter, and a Rainbow Saison. Enjoyed them all with Saison being the only one that I hadn't tried before. If you are on Maui, I would recommend visiting both and enjoy the aloha!
